A new rowing rest area is being built in Szigetbecse – The development will boost the Danube riverbank’s appeal to tourists

A new rowing rest area and a state-of-the-art community space are to be built Szigetbecse on the banks of the Danube. As part of the project, a service building, a kayak and canoe pontoon, car parks, cycling infrastructure and a number of leisure facilities will be constructed.

The public procurement tender for the project was awarded to Multiplex Construct Kft., with the net value of the works contract amounting to 92.24 million forints.

The development, which is being carried out under the TOP Plusz programme with European Union funding of approximately 150 million forints, is scheduled for completion on 1 July 2027. The completed rowing rest area will enhance the Danube embankment at Szigetbecse as a modern community and tourist destination appealing to people of all ages.

Solar-powered service building with a multi-purpose space

As part of the project, a new, two-storey, 76.42 square metre service building is being built. The ground floor will house

• the buffet,
• staff rooms,
• the warehouse,
• the ladies’ and gents’ toilets,
• as well as the accessible toilet.

On the upper floor, a multifunctional space of nearly 38.5 square metres will welcome visitors.

The facility’s energy supply is partly provided by a solar panel system installed on the roof. The rowing rest area also provides for visitors’ comfort with changing rooms, showers, an accessible toilet equipped with a nappy-changing facility, and a water supply point.

The Danube embankment is also being revitalised as a community space

The project not only supports water sports, but also significantly improves the facilities for leisure and recreation. Among other things, the recreation area features

• covered cycle shed,
• a two-panel solar-powered street lamp,
• twelve benches,
• four garden tables,
• sun loungers and sunbeds,
• separate waste collection bins,
• In addition, nearly 460 square metres of paving will be laid.

According to information available on the official Facebook page, a new water play area, picnic tables, a table tennis table and refurbished green spaces will be available to visitors at the beach. As part of the landscaping project, nearly 950 square metres of green space will be landscaped and planted.

As part of the development, 11 car parking spaces and one accessible parking space will be created, and bicycle racks will also be installed.
