The results are in: Salgótarján's city centre can be revitalised
The centre of Salgótarján will become green: the results of the „Salgótarján City Centre Rehabilitation” idea competition announced by Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium have been announced, according to information sent to our newspaper. At the award ceremony on 15 December, Regő Lánszki, State Secretary for Architecture, and Bálint Kreicsi, Mayor of Salgótarján, gave speeches. We reported on the competition in a separate article in September here.
Building on the city's modernist heritage
The city centre of Salgótarján was shaped by industrialisation and 20th-century modernist urban architecture, which gave the town a unique character even on a national level. The aim of the recently concluded competition was to build on this heritage to create sustainable and liveable city centre solutions. The competition received numerous high-quality designs that provided answers to the renewal of urban functioning, the green space system and public spaces. The jury awarded three prizes and three awards.
Award winners:
- Purchases: EGYHETED STUDIO Kft.; Kazal Stúdió Kft.; the TŰZSZÜNET Nonprofit Kft. and his collaborators' joint plan
- Third prize: Zsolt Kazi, Borbála Fülöp, Blanka Viktória Gáspárdy, Ádám Pribil
- Second prize: AU.ROOM Építész Műhely Kft. and the 3Z Kft. joint plan
- First prize: SAGRA Építész Kft. plan
The winning entry reinterprets Salgótarján in harmony with the surrounding landscape: it creates human-scale community spaces, urban spaces interspersed with green areas, and a clear central structure that restores the town centre to its natural and urban role.
- emphasise.
Regő Lánszki emphasised that the Salgótarján design competition was not looking for spectacular icons, but rather for effective urban solutions. As he put it, the renewal of Salgótarján's city centre is a roadmap for the future, building on its modernist heritage, landscape features and improvements in quality of life.
