The second oldest confectionery in the country and a bourgeois-noble mansion in Gyula are renewed

The foundation stone for the reconstruction of the Százéves Cukrászda and Ladics-ház was laid in Gyula on 11 August. The two iconic buildings in Békés County will be renovated at a net cost of HUF 784 million. According to the public procurement data, the dual project will be implemented by FUTIZO Kft., also based in Gyula.

The Hundred Years Confectionery is a very old and valuable bourgeois house of the Southern Plain; it was built after the great fire of 1801, between 1801 and 1803, designed and built by the architect id. The building was designed and built by Antal Czigler in 1801. The ground floor was already a shop selling oriental delicacies and sweets in 1803, and today it is known as the second oldest confectionery in the country, with its original equipment still in use.

The Ladics House was built at the beginning of the 19th century as a ground-floor bourgeois house, a notary's residence. Its first inhabitant, Lajos Szakál, was a guest of Sándor Petőfi. He was followed by the Ladics descendants. Both buildings became the property of the town in the 1950s.

Connecting two important monuments in Gyula

The project will renovate and insulate the basement, repair and insulate the roof structure, renew the mechanical equipment, expand the consumer area, renovate and restore the original floor plan of the currently unused upstairs area and build a new water closet.

A passageway is also being built to connect Ladics House and the Centenary Confectionery.

The Centenary Confectionery is an unmissable programme for visitors to Gyula

Csaba Latorcai, Minister of State of the Prime Minister's Office, recalled his roots in Békés County at the foundation stone-laying ceremony, and said that as a child he often visited the Centenary Confectionery, which he never misses visiting with his family when he is in town. Speaking about the Ladics House, he said that there are not many such authentic showplaces in the country, as it is the only noble, bourgeois home where the entire original heritage can be seen.

HUF 10 billion in development since autumn 2019

Mayor Ernő Görgényi said that the municipality won one billion forints from the EU Operational Programme for Spatial and Urban Development, which will be used to preserve the Centenary Confectionery and the Ladics House and develop tourism. This funding was also used to build a cycle path on the Nagyváradi road.
