The gigantic investment project at Ferihegy Airport has begun – here's what the Terminal 3 project entails

The €1 billion development will include a terminal building covering more than 35,000 square metres, which will be able to serve an additional 10 million passengers.

The foundation stone for Terminal 3 was laid at Budapest's Liszt Ferenc International Airport. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was also present at the event. As a central element of the comprehensive development package, a completely new passenger terminal will be built, together with the associated airport infrastructure.

According to information released at the event, the approximately €1 billion project will include the construction of a main terminal building covering more than 35,000 square metres, which will be able to serve an additional 10 million passengers.

The investment will also include the construction of

  • a new 15,000 square metre passenger terminal,
  • 13 new aircraft parking spaces,
  • 132,000 square metres of new retail space,
  • as well as a 7.2 MW solar park.

The project will significantly increase the airport's capacity: according to previous government information, the airport's annual passenger traffic could double compared to current levels and reach 40 million.

In a broader sense, this represents an investment package worth more than one trillion forints also includes the construction of an airport express railway line and the modernisation of road access to the airport.
