Mohács 500: the entire exterior façade of Mohács Town Hall will be renovated in time for the anniversary
We have reported several times reported on it that the development project, which will be implemented in the 500th anniversary year of Mohács, will enrich the city centre with a unified image, spectacular community spaces and new urban functions. Among other things, the development programme includes the renovation of Széchenyi Square and the arcade of the Votive Church, the renovation and expansion of the Town Hall, the construction of a car park on the site of the former bread factory and the creation of a central memorial to the battle.
Árkay's building will be restored to its former glory
Mohács's renovated main square (which will be designed by the experts at Épkar Zrt. are implementing) is dominated by the symmetrical town hall with its corner and tower domes, decorated with Hungarian-style, oriental motifs. Árkay Aladár's classically proportioned public building, constructed between 1924 and 1928, is a prominent architectural feature of the region, although part of it was not owned by the city for a long time. As part of the developments related to the 500th anniversary of Mohács, the city of Mohács recently purchased the wing of the building that previously served as a post office and then a telecommunications centre, thus enabling the complete renovation of the entire building.
During the investment, the entire façade will be renovated, the previously neglected section will have its windows and doors replaced, energy efficiency improvements will be implemented, and the entire mechanical systems of the building will also be renovated.
At the press conference announcing the start of construction, Mayor Gábor Pávkovics emphasised: press conference:
An important element of the project is the construction of the fourth tower, as originally planned, which will house a wedding hall, conference facilities and new functions.
In addition, the inner courtyard will be renovated and the location of administrative functions will be reconsidered so that customer service can take place closer to Széchenyi Square in a modern environment.
It has already been partially renovated, but there is still a lot of work to be done.
1.6 billion forints will be available for the public procurement contract VivaPalazzo Zrt. to carry out the tasks commissioned by the local government: by ensuring a uniform façade appearance and developing the south-eastern corner of the block, they can give a dignified appearance to the town hall complex, which forms the western edge of the main square currently under reconstruction.
The most recent partial renovation took place between 2015 and 2020, during which the windows and doors of the part of the building owned by the local government were replaced, the previous bitumen roofing was replaced with metal sheeting, the attic ceilings were insulated, the facades were renovated, the gas boiler heating system was modernised, and solar panels were installed on the courtyard roofs. However, the former post office section of the building was left out of the renovation, so the main façade facing the square currently presents a confusing picture.
They are complemented by unique windows, curtain walls and lifts.
The building with a gross floor area of 3228 m² (as well as the 669 m² extension) is equipped with triple-glazed, custom-made wooden external window and door frames. On the street side of the stairwell and above the passageway, the contractor must install a thermally insulated, thermal bridge-free aluminium curtain wall with openable windows, covering a total area of 51 m², and an aluminium skylight must also be installed on top of the planned corner risalit.
The roof structure of the former post office building must be partially renovated (approximately 299 m²) and partially rebuilt with steel frames (approximately 68 m²). A fire compartment boundary must also be created in the section to be renovated. The winning bid, VivaPalazzo, also includes the installation of a 1.7 x 1.8 metre reinforced concrete shaft in the planned stairwell, without a machine room, suitable for barrier-free use, with a load capacity of 630 kg/8 persons and 4 stops.
