The Miskolctapolca Cave Baths could reopen as early as September following the fire
The Miskolctapolca Cave Baths could be welcoming guests again as early as September, provided that the trial run following the completion of construction at the end of August is successful – it was announced during a press tour of the facility. Tamás Horváth, technical manager of the project involving the spa’s restoration, said that the opening is conditional upon satisfactory trial operation and bacteriological results.
Specialised technology was used during the restoration
We have previously reported on the work taking place at the facility on several occasions. At the end of April, we reported that the main concrete works in the bathing hall and the cave passage had been completed, and that the roof structure was also finished. The Miskolctapolca Cave Bath caught fire on 6 September 2024; as a result of the fire, the building’s roof structure was completely destroyed, though fortunately no one was injured. The restoration of the facility is being carried out by the general contractor MENTO group of companies, specifically the specialists from DHJ Építő Kft.. The company special technology to deepen the cave passages belonging to the spa for fire safety reasons.
The facility's mechanical systems are being modernised
The works are not just about post-fire restoration, but also involve a comprehensive technical refurbishment of the spa complex. The building services systems are being completely replaced, and the ventilation system and boiler room are also undergoing a comprehensive refurbishment. Underfloor heating is being installed in the bathing halls and cave passages, for which a recess of around 40 centimetres has been cut into the floor.
The pool surrounds are being refurbished
The pool area in the bathing hall also requires reinforcement of the cladding. Insulation material is being installed on the side walls and the floor to ensure long-term watertightness. The electrical wiring and lighting in the cave passages are being completely overhauled, meaning that the renovation work involves several key technical systems at once.
There are plans to open the outdoor and indoor pools at the same time
During the site visit, it was stated that the project manager and the contractor are working continuously, including working overtime where necessary, to bring the opening date as close as possible. According to the plans, provided the water test is successful and the bacteriological results are satisfactory, the outdoor and indoor pools will be able to open to the public at the same time.
Tamás Horváth also noted that the renovation of the spa’s medical department is not part of the contractor’s contractual obligations. However, the local council is exploring options to secure the necessary funding so that this department can also be refurbished.
