The banks of the Szinva are being returned to the people of Miskolc – the Szinva Green Corridor project gets underway
A 3.2-kilometre cycle path and 14,000 square metres of public space development will link the Győri kapui district to Miskolc’s main square.
Miskolc City Council is seeking a designer for the Szinva Green Corridor project, the aim of which is to establish cycling and pedestrian links between the Győri kapui district and Miskolc city centre, primarily along the Szinva stream. The design brief also covers the development and regeneration of the associated public spaces and community areas.
Applications are invited until 5 August 2026 for projects that will establish a link between Nagyváthy Street and Szent István Square (the main square) through targeted improvements and traffic management measures.
According to the concept, the cycle route will be implemented using traffic engineering measures, which will involve extending the cycle lane along Dayka Gábor Street and Nagyváthy Street, and will then continue along the section of the riverbank between Nagyváthy Street and Kalapács Street, where the planners are to develop the Szinva Green Corridor footpath and cycle path.
Community spaces must also be created in every associated open space.
They are opening up the banks of the stream
On the section between Nagyváthy Street and Thököly Street, on the left bank of the Szinva, a traffic-calmed road will be created, whilst new play equipment may be installed in the existing playgrounds within the green spaces between the prefabricated blocks of flats.
From here towards the city centre, pedestrian crossings are being installed on Vászonfehérítő Street to provide access to the riverside terraces to be created along the banks of the stream. These terraces could serve as ideal resting spots, where the designers will need to install benches, barbecue facilities and shelters.
On the stretch between Tímármalom Street and Acél Street, the local council is also planning to create a larger rest area and a natural waterside terrace.
The total area affected by the project is estimated at nine hectares, and the quantities are as follows:
- 1,230 metres of new cycle path,
- 1,990 metres of cycle path,
- 10,000 m2 creation of green spaces,
- 4,400 m² of public space development,
- the conversion of four junctions.
