A design competition is being held to find the best solution for developing the former manor estate into a town centre.

The southern areas of Debrecen are undergoing increasingly rapid development – not unrelated to industrial investment. This is particularly true of the Epreskert and Tégláskert districts, close to the airport, which may soon be enhanced by a vast, multi-functional town centre.

Housing needs to be provided for 8,500 people in the area

Debrecen City Council has launched an open design competition to draw up a development concept for the nearly 88-hectare estate area located in the southern part of the city. The aim is to draw up an urban planning proposal designed to lay the foundations for the municipal Master Plan required to prepare for future investments.

Applications are being accepted until 30 October for the masterplan, which will see the creation of a new southern city centre on the former manor estate, capable of providing housing for at least 8,500 people and creating at least 4,000 jobs.

A further aim of the design competition is for the concept to give rise to sustainable development proposals that are in harmony with the surrounding urban fabric, its functions, the infrastructure and the natural environment.
