The west-east route of the EuroVelo may be extended further, linking a number of water-related sites – river valleys, lakes and spas – into a single itinerary.

Project Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium has issued a conditional call for tenders for the design of a further section of cycle route EuroVelo. The notice initiating the procedure provides for the preparation of the Tiszafüred – Hortobágy – Balmazújváros – Debrecen route in two phases.

The Hungarian section could be completed

The project involves the further extension of one of the east–west routes within the EuroVelo European cycle route network: the EuroVelo route covers 14 regions in Austria and Hungary. In keeping with its theme, the route links a number of water-related sites: river valleys, lakes and spas.

The description indicates that the development of the cycle route between Hortobágy and Debrecen will enable the completion of the Hungarian section of route EuroVelo 14. This will be achieved by linking up the municipal cycle routes that have already been completed.

A new cycle bridge is being built over the Keleti Main Canal

The public procurement notice also reveals details of the two sub-projects. According to this , the cycle path between Hortobágy and Balmazújváros (a 9.649 km cycle path will be built on a separate new route; whilst local resurfacing of the concrete-slab road will take place over 7.369 km; and two level crossings will also be renovated. It is interesting to note that there is no direct road link between the two towns, only a rail connection (see the map below).

Following on from the above, between Balmazújváros and Debrecen, the missing section of the cycle path on the existing Route 3321 (Balmazújváros–Hajdúszoboszló) needs to be designed in the vicinity of the Eastern Main Canal. A new cycle bridge will also be built here, aligned with the existing road bridge.

Investigations are underway into the routes taken by the BMW

On the same section, as an extension of the cycle path running alongside Main Road 33, a new cycle path is to be planned over a distance of more than 3 kilometres between the Látóképi reservoir and the Látóképi inn. A further section to be planned is the stretch between the 99+203 km mark near Debrecen and the junction on Orgona Street in the village of Kismacs. In addition to all this, the designer will be tasked with examining the route options for the section in front of the BMW factory.

A total of 8.03 km of cycle path is to be planned between Balmazújváros and Debrecen, of which 6.03 km will be a new route.
