A total of eight new roundabouts will make it easier to use the bypass.

The ancestral home of the Báthory family, this small town – which still has a population of over 10,000 – is the historical and economic centre of the North-Eastern Nyírség region, where industrial activity is also significant thanks to good rail links. Road 471, which runs through the town, is busy for this reason alone, but the economic importance – and consequently the traffic volume – of the route linking Debrecen with Mátészalka is further enhanced by the direct link between the county town of Hajdú-Bihar and the Ukrainian border.

Recognising this, it was decided to build a U-shaped bypass around the town from three directions; details of the tender can be found in the latest public procurement notice. According to this, the successful bidder will have two years to construct the two road sections – the south-eastern and western bypasses of Nyírbátor. Applications for the works are being accepted until 10 June.

South-East Bypass

The section of Main Road 471 bypassing Nyírbátor from the south and east starts at the roundabout at kilometre marker 50+320, then follows the route set out in the preliminary design for the most part, reaching the area of the planned roundabout in the built-up area. From there, it runs for approximately 1 kilometre along the route of the existing 4915 connecting road (the surface and parameters of which also need to be upgraded), all the way to a planned third roundabout.

The new 2×1-lane main road section, with a total length of approximately 7.4 km, crosses the Debrecen–Nyírbátor–Mátészalka and Nyíregyháza–Mátészalka railway lines at different levels.

The two-span bridge, with a superstructure length of 51.45 metres and a clear span of 29.74 metres, has a pier layout of 19.17+31.17 metres and a cross-sectional width of 11.13 metres. The new road then continues straight on to reach the planned terminus of the 471 main road, where the recently constructed Industrial Access Road also joins a roundabout.

Key figures: construction of a 7,370-metre-long, dual-carriageway section of main road, of which

  • It runs for 1,044 metres along the route of the existing 4915 connecting road,
  • the remaining 6.4 km followed a new route (the 1,044-metre section bisects the 7,370-metre stretch).
  • Construction of a bridge with a 29.74-metre clear span and a prefabricated reinforced concrete girder superstructure, –
  • The construction of four new roundabouts and the addition of a new direct exit to an existing roundabout,
  • Construction of two pairs of bus bays;
  • carrying out local improvements to cycle paths and pavements.

The Western Bypass

The new section of Main Road 493, which bypasses Nyírbátor to the west, starts at the three-way roundabout to be built at kilometre marker 17+363 and reaches its terminus at kilometre marker 47+996, where it ends at a roundabout junction created by the realignment of Road 471.

The new 2×1-lane main road section, with a total length of approximately 4.9 kilometres, intersects the Nyíregyháza–Mátészalka–Zajta MÁV railway line, which it crosses via a bridge at a different level due to the constraints of Road 4911, which runs directly alongside it.

The two-span bridge, with a superstructure length of 55.30 metres and a clear span of 26 metres, is to be constructed with a span configuration of 27.15+27.15 metres and a cross-sectional width of 11.13 metres, using a prefabricated reinforced concrete girder superstructure.

Key quantitative characteristics: during the construction of the continuous 4.9 km-long, dual-carriageway section of the main road

  • the construction of a 26-metre-span bridge with a prefabricated reinforced concrete girder superstructure,
  • Construction of four new roundabouts,
  • the construction of a pair of bus bays and
  • Local improvements to cycle paths and pavements are required.
