Apples and pears: according to MKIF, no valid conclusions can be drawn about the operation of the M6 from technical parameters that are not comparable
We are publishing the announcement MKIF Zrt. in its original form.
„Last week, in a social media post he published, the Minister for Transport compared the technical requirements for the handover of the M6 motorway with the operational requirements set out in document MKIF Zrt.. The two sets of data are not suitable for comparison in this context.”.
The operational conditions represent ongoing requirements, whilst the handover conditions refer to the one-off technical requirements for handing the track back to the State, which are stricter than the operational conditions. Neither our Company nor the public is aware of the operational values and conditions of the other bidders.
When comparing the handover parameters, the technical concession requirements for the MKIF Zrt. are stricter in three out of five cases, and in one case they are identical to those under which the concessionaire currently operating the M6 motorway is handing the motorway back to the Hungarian State.
Another important point is that our Company must also ensure compliance with the technical parameters in the case of junction branches, whilst this requirement does not apply to the current concessionaire. Furthermore, according to reports in the press:
„The current service provider, M6 Duna, estimates annual expenditure of 3–6 billion forints; according to our information, this is because it does not plan a one-off major refurbishment, but instead anticipates carrying out „regular maintenance investments”.” In contrast, the figures for MKIF Zrt. include the cost of a large-scale maintenance project over the 11-year period under review. This means that by the end of the period under review, the track will have a newer surface and be in better condition.
The figure of 149 billion reported in the press is also incorrect. It is significantly higher than the option amount specified in our contract.
In the Hungarian State’s 2026 budget estimates, the figure for the M5/M6 concessions, which operate approximately 390 km, is 460 million Ft/km, whilst for the MKIF Zrt. concession, which manages 1,315 km, the figure is 288 million Ft/km, based on revenue projected for this year. This represents a difference of more than one and a half times per kilometre.
Our company has still not received any official information as to whether the previously exercised option to operate the M6 motorway will be revoked. In view of the critical nature of this infrastructure, we are still awaiting an official letter from the relevant ministry.
Over the past few weeks, we have shared all the facts and figures relating to this matter with the public. As we have done so far, we wish to resolve the M6 issue in future through official consultations with the Ministry of Transport. We reaffirm our previous statement that our Company still does not wish to participate in political or public debates; we regard our task as fulfilling our contractual obligations and providing a safe, high-quality service to road users.”
