New car parks with permeable surfacing are being built in Zugló – rainwater will be retained on site

A contractor is being sought to create 45 new parking spaces in Zsivora Park, in Budapest’s 14th district. The project also incorporates a number of climate protection measures: the on-site utilisation of rainwater, the development of green spaces and the preservation of the park.

The Zuglói Városgazdálkodási Közszolgáltató Zrt. tender is inviting bids from contractors for the construction of car park spaces planned along the existing road in Zsivora Park, with a deadline for submission of 19 August – as revealed in the call for tenders published in the Electronic Public Procurement System.

Instead of building a new parking lane, the existing area will be redeveloped

The technical documentation for the tender reveals that the road construction, traffic engineering and road drainage plans for the development were drawn up by TANDEM Mérnökiroda Kft. . The background to the project states that, according to an earlier proposal, a new parking lane would have been built, but this would have taken up a larger area of the park. The developer accepted the experts’ comments, and so the parking bays will be created along the existing road, which is approximately 127 metres long. The traffic flow on the current two-way street, which is approximately six metres wide, will remain unchanged. The carriageway will be narrowed to a width of around 5–5.3 metres, and parking—which until now has taken place partly on the carriageway and partly on the green space—will be redirected to properly marked parallel and perpendicular parking spaces. As cars have previously been parked on the carriageway, and under the planned layout they will be able to use the parallel parking spaces off the carriageway, the width of the carriageway available for traffic will increase.

Rainwater is utilised on site

A total of 45 parking spaces will be created as part of the project, one of which will be designed to be accessible to people with disabilities.
The spaces designated for cars will be paved with prefabricated concrete grass pavers filled with crushed stone. The aim of this permeable design is to ensure that as much rainfall as possible seeps away on site, and that the development does not increase the load on the sewerage network. Geotextile will be laid between the crushed stone base and the base, soil-improvement and frost-protection layers, as well as on the subsoil. Its purpose is to prevent any hydrocarbon derivatives that may leak from vehicles from entering the subsoil and groundwater.
As part of the works, two drainage shafts will also be rebuilt, whilst 364.3 metres of raised kerbs, 197.4 metres of recessed kerbs and 15.2 metres of garden edging will be constructed.

Another aim of the project is to increase the number of trees and plants

A key consideration in the layout of the car parks was the preservation of the existing tree population. The works will require the relocation of two trees of smaller diameter. The project includes the planting of eight trees and thirteen shrubs, as well as the laying of turf on the affected green areas. The plants will be planted partly between the parking spaces and partly near the fitness park. The shrubs and the planned parking barrier posts will also prevent vehicles from driving onto the remaining green space.

The road junction at the school’s service entrance is to be upgraded

According to the plans, the road junction leading to the school’s service entrance will be rebuilt over an area of 80.6 square metres. To improve safety for pedestrians between the park and the housing estate, a 31.5 square metre traffic-calming speed bump, paved with yellow paving stones, will also be installed. A 30 km/h speed limit zone may be established on the surrounding streets.

Public lighting is being expanded and modernised

According to the tender specifications, the project involves eight street lighting columns: the successful tenderer will also be responsible for installing a new one alongside the existing ones. During the partial dismantling and refurbishment of the network, 93 metres of underground cable will be laid, and the old luminaires will be replaced with modern LED fixtures.
The works will include all necessary tasks relating to demolition, earthworks, cable protection, electrical installation and restoration. The successful tenderer must also prepare the completion and certification documentation required for handover to the operator.
