Work continues on the cycle route between EuroVelo 6 and the southern part of Dunakeszi

The Dunakeszi cycle network associated with the EuroVelo 6 project is being extended with a new section. As part of the „Construction of a cycle path in Dunakeszi – Phase II” project, a new cycle path with a full-width surface will be built along the service road running parallel to Pallag Street, from the Oázis garden centre to the Auchan department store, covering a total of 620 running metres, as part of the work on the SWIETELSKY Magyarország Kft..

According to site manager Attila Farkas, construction began on 27 July 2026 and is scheduled to be completed in mid-September. The works are being carried out in three phases; the project also includes the installation of the traffic management systems required for the cycle path.

This development initiative is also in line with the wider regional aim of ensuring the continuity of cycle routes between Budapest and the Danube Bend. In our August article, we already noted that the completion of two other missing links in the area is currently on the agenda, with funding available under the IKOP Plusz programme. One would create a link between the cycle path coming from Dunakeszi and the tarmac road running along the embankment, whilst the other would provide a cycle route between the embankment and the Danube promenade.

From EuroVelo 6 to Auchan

This latest development ties in with previous cycle path projects in Dunakeszi; we will now look at these in turn.

Between Dunakeszi and Budapest in 2021, as part of the EuroVelo 6 project, the 5.36-kilometre cycle path was opened, running from Vasrózsa Street in the capital towards Dunakeszi, alongside Main Road 2, all the way to the Pallag Street roundabout. One of the key outcomes of the project was the creation of a separate, safe infrastructure for cyclists alongside the busy Main Road 2.

This current investment is also linked in one respect to a cycle path construction project in Dunakeszi that was started earlier. According to the Dunakeszi local authority’s previous project description from the Dunakeszi local authority, the cycle path starting from the Szent István út roundabout on Main Road 2 connects to the EuroVelo 6 network at the Pallag utca roundabout, then runs along the Pallag utca service road to the Auchan car park. The development first phase of the development, the cycle route was built along Main Road 2 up to the section in front of Lidl, whilst in the current, second phase, the cycle zone continues along the service road towards Auchan.

As a result of the project, cycle routes between Dunakeszi and the shopping centres to the south can be established in such a way that they are separated from motor vehicle traffic.

During the construction work, however, care was also taken to ensure that the operation of the industrial park was disrupted as little as possible. According to the site manager, the work was organised in coordination with the transport needs of the businesses operating in the area, with disruption kept to a minimum.

They sped up the construction work using a finisher

According to the site manager’s report, all layers of the road structure were laid using a finisher , except in those narrow sections where mechanical laying was physically impossible.

The use of machinery has significantly reduced the time taken to complete the work, whilst enabling a more uniform finish.

In addition to laying the new surface, on sections not affected by the roadworks local surface repairs, kerb construction or kerb cutting , as well as ditch clearing were also carried out.

Environmental considerations were also taken into account during the works. The site manager emphasised that one of the key aspects of the project was the protection of the existing tree-lined avenue and the preservation of the natural features.
