Preparations are under way for the regeneration of an entire neighbourhood in Szeged as part of a large-scale project: the design tender for the complex reconstruction of the northern part of the city has been published on TED. As part of this investment, which is partly funded by the EU, the area surrounding the small forest in the northern part of the city will be revitalised: specifically, development work will be carried out in the area bounded by József Attila Avenue, Makkosházi Boulevard, Rókusi Boulevard, Körtöltés Street, Makkoserdő Row and Rózsa Street. The public procurement notice also lists the areas concerned: the description identifies a total of 21 specifically defined development sites.

The county town’s website previously described in detail the concept being implemented under the TOP Plusz programme, for which the contracted grant amounts to 1.359 billion forints.

Community gardens are being set up

The stated aim is to make the neighbourhood more liveable and sustainable; among other things, the retention of rainwater is a key focus: to this end, the public procurement tender stipulates that rainwater collected from surrounding pavements and roofs must be channelled to and stored in green spaces. As one of the interesting elements of the greening programme, the successful bidder will also be required to design community gardens for the neighbourhood in question.

As part of the development, green spaces will be revitalised, trees and shrubs will be planted, playgrounds and recreational areas will be developed, pedestrian and cycle links will be improved, and the surfacing of roads and car parks will be renewed. Plans include modernising street lighting with an LED system, whilst the project also involves the creation of community gardens, street furniture and accessible playground features.

The preparatory work also includes the detailed design drawings

A key consideration during the design phase – alongside retaining rainwater on site – is the protection of new and existing trees, as well as the coordinated layout of utility networks and green spaces.

The recently published public procurement notice seeks a designer to prepare authorisation and construction drawings, as well as to provide design supervision; the deadline for submitting tenders is 12 November 2026. The planned completion date for the project is 30 April 2029.
