In place of the bridge, which is more than half a century old, a modern crossing with two separate carriageways will be built.

Construction is continuing on the new Luegbrücke, or Lueg Bridge, on the A13 Brenner motorway in Tyrol. The piers on the section of the bridge leading towards Innsbruck are already approaching their final height, whilst work has begun on erecting the scaffolding system – weighing nearly a thousand tonnes – and assembling the steel structure.

It is only from a bird’s-eye view that one can truly see and appreciate the construction work on this imposing bridge and the project’s true scale; it is from this perspective that this short video was shared by STRABAG.

PORR and STRABAG, a consortium formed by two giants of the Austrian construction industry, has been working on one of Austria’s most complex infrastructure projects since March 2025, commissioned by ASFINAG.

Even the track layout is taking shape

The Luegbrücke, which is approximately 1.8 kilometres long, is being completely refurbished after more than 55 years. At this stage of the project, the alignment of the new track leading towards Innsbruck is already clearly visible. The piers have almost reached their final height, whilst the contractors have erected the first elements of the scaffolding system to be used in the construction of the large-span bridge structure, which weighs around 1,000 tonnes.

At the same time, work on assembling the steel structure is proceeding at a rapid pace on site. The next major milestone will be the construction of the track slab. According to the plans, the first 1,600 metres of track slab could be completed by February 2027.

Two new bridge structures are replacing the old one

As part of the €217 million investment, the existing bridge will be gradually demolished and replaced by two new, separate structures.

First, the new carriageway leading to Innsbruck will be built alongside the existing bridge. Once it is complete, traffic will be diverted onto it, after which demolition of the old bridge structure can begin. Finally, a second new bridge structure leading towards the Brenner will be built on the site of the old one.

The project is taking place in challenging terrain, as the bridge also crosses the Sill Valley. Here, a bridge section approximately 110 metres long is being built, with piers up to 60 metres high.

Construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2030.
