Between kilometre 16 and kilometre 54, resurfacing work is taking place at several locations on the already widened carriageway of the M1 motorway heading towards Budapest. According to plans, two lanes in each direction will be diverted to this section during the autumn so that work can begin on dismantling and completely rebuilding the carriageway heading towards Győr.

The expansion of the M1 motorway has entered a new phase. According to the latest Facebook post by MKIF Magyar Koncessziós Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő Zrt., construction machinery is now at work in an increasing number of locations on the resurfacing of the carriageway heading towards Budapest. The company has shared images of the current works from the M1–M100 junction, which is under construction, and the Bicske area.

Traffic arrangements may change significantly this autumn

The section of track currently under construction will play a key role in the next phase of the project. According to information from MKIF, by autumn 2026, traffic heading towards both the national border and the capital will pass through here, with two lanes in each direction. This will free up the carriageway leading towards Győr, where work can begin on excavating the existing carriageway to a depth of 100–120 centimetres, followed by its complete reconstruction. On the new carriageway, the combined thickness of the asphalt layers will be 32 centimetres, which, according to the MKIF announcement, is approximately one and a half times that of the previous surface.

72 underpasses and overpasses are also being rebuilt

The development of the M1 goes far beyond simply widening the main carriageway; a significant proportion of the existing infrastructure will also need to be adapted to the new cross-section. As part of the project, 72 existing underpasses and overpasses will be rebuilt, 11 junctions will be modernised, and four new grade-separated junctions will be constructed. Six complex service areas will be completely refurbished, whilst the remaining service areas affected will be expanded and modernised. Around 300 new lorry parking spaces will be created, and family-friendly improvements will also be implemented.

A number of related systems, ranging from drainage to noise protection, are being upgraded

The engineering sites at Bicske and Komárom are to be expanded and modernised, whilst a seven-level interchange is to be converted into a roundabout. Modern drainage and water storage systems are to be constructed, and the length and height of the noise barriers are to be significantly increased.
