From today, motorists can once again use the northern flyover at Flórián Square

Our newspaper has also been following the renovation of the flyovers at Flórián Square. The contractors carrying out the bridge refurbishments as part of the BKK project, KM Építő Kft. and HE-DO, have completed work on both bridges, according to a recent announcement from BKK. Consequently, in the early hours of Sunday 30 August, road traffic was able to resume on the northern flyover at Flórián Square towards Szentendrei út.

This marks the completion of the full refurbishment of the two flyovers linking Szentendrei Road and the Árpád Bridge.

In the coming period, only minor fault rectifications and the restoration work on the Flórián Square surface junction remain to be completed; thus, the bulk of the work – namely the two bridges – has been completed by the deadline, in time for the start of the school term.

Unexpected problems also made the work more difficult

The development, which is taking place Főmterv Zrt. project, the contractors successfully completed the refurbishment of the two bridges, with a combined length of 686.57 metres, at a cost of 3.27 billion forints, well within the planned budget. During the comprehensive structural and condition-improvement reconstruction of the northern and southern flyovers and their bridge components, the following works were carried out as the most important:

• reconstruction of the carriageway structure: the condition and geometry of the carriageway slabs were improved; new full-surface insulation was installed on both bridges; and new asphalt surfacing was laid on the bridges and the connecting ramps;
• repair of reinforced concrete structures: the damaged concrete surfaces were removed, corrosion of the reinforcing steel was halted, missing reinforcing steel was replaced, new reinforced concrete surfaces were formed, and the protection of the concrete surfaces against salt corrosion was renewed;
• reconstruction of the bridge abutments and bridge ends: new heel blocks and expansion joints were installed at the bridge abutments, the expansion joints above the piers were removed, and the heel block structures above the supports were refurbished;
• replacement of bridge kerbs and guardrails: new monolithic reinforced concrete kerbs were constructed, and new prefabricated apron elements were installed on the sides of the superstructure and retaining walls, onto which high-containment-level road guardrails and fall protection were fitted;
• renovation of the stone cladding on the bridge abutments: the stone cladding, which was in a state of disrepair, was renovated and the broken sections of cladding were replaced;
• cosmetic restoration: defects on the structural surfaces were repaired, graffiti was removed, and an anti-graffiti coating was applied.

They were completed on time

The first phase of the refurbishment began on 1 March 2025 with the closure of the southern flyover. Following the demolition work, the structural condition of the structure was found to be worse than expected. Due to damage to the deck slabs that had not been visible previously, additional technical work was incorporated into the project, which also led to changes to the original refurbishment schedule.

The southern flyover reopened to traffic in November 2025, after which work began on the renovation of the northern flyover. Drawing on the experience gained on the southern flyover, the experts carried out the condition assessment of the northern flyover with particular care. Structural work continued on the flyover throughout 2026; by May, the project’s technical completion rate had exceeded 70 per cent, and by the end of July, it had risen to over 90 per cent.

Following the completion of the official procedure for opening the road to traffic, road traffic was able to resume on the northern flyover on 30 August. Minor rectification works related to the project and the restoration of the at-grade junction, following the removal of the temporary traffic management measures, will continue thereafter and are expected to last until 17 September.
