Bound track
New pedestrian crossings and a junction with traffic lights are being built in Angyalföld
This project by the local council of Budapest’s 13th district affects one of Angyalföld’s key transport routes. Béke Street is, in fact, one of Angyalföld’s major transport routes, carrying heavy road traffic, including tram number 14.
Tahi Street, meanwhile, plays an important role in providing access to the surrounding residential areas and institutions; the junction is used daily by large numbers of pedestrians, cyclists and public transport passengers.
The aim of the project is to make crossing the road safer, whilst ensuring that tram and road traffic benefit from a more coordinated and modern traffic management system.
The public procurement contract has been divided into two separate lots; the reconstruction of the tram tracks and the installation of the traffic light system will be carried out by separate contractors.
The tram tracks are being rebuilt at a busy urban junction
The winner of the first part of the public procurement tender is VASÚTÉPÍTŐ és KARBANTARTÓ Zrt., which will carry out the reconstruction of the tram track for a net sum of 101.65 million forints.
During the works, part of the existing track sections will be dismantled, after which new 49E1-system track, including contact lines, will be laid. The works will include, amongst other things,
- dismantling of existing rails and switch rails,
- construction of a new section of track,
- fitting of guide rails,
- preparation of rail welds,
- track alignment and renewal of the crushed stone ballast,
- replacement of rails and switches,
- repair of asphalt surfaces,
- Repair of overhead line support poles.
A state-of-the-art traffic light system is being installed
The second part of the public procurement contract was awarded to VIA-NORTONIA Építőipari Kft. with a net contract value of 41.74 million forints.
As part of this, a completely new traffic light system is being installed at the junction. The project involves significant earthworks and the laying of utility lines; several hundred metres of protective conduit and signalling cable will be laid underground, and new cable chambers and control equipment will be installed. As part of the project, among other things,
- nearly 700 linear metres of various types of protective pipe will be installed,
- more than 1,600 linear metres of signalling cable will be laid,
- new traffic control equipment is being installed,
- a connection to the Budapest Traffic Control Centre will be established,
- LED traffic lights for vehicles, trams, cyclists and pedestrians will be installed,
- A total of 12 pedestrian signal heads and cycle signals are being installed,
- In addition, eight voice-activated audible warning devices will help visually impaired pedestrians to move about safely.
The scope of the project also includes the installation of the power connection, the development of control programmes, and the carrying out of operational and field tests.
