Last-minute preparations before handover – This is how the refurbishment of the Flórián Square flyover came to an end

We have been keeping our readers informed about the construction work taking place at one of the capital’s key transport hubs, during which the Flórián Square flyover have both undergone major refurbishment.

The main contractor for the project carried out as part of the BKK investment was KM Építő Kft.; HE-DO also contributed to the works, whilst the design tasks were carried out by Főmterv Mérnöki Tervező Zrt..

The southern bridge, the counterpart to the northern bridge, was completed in the autumn of 2025 and has been opened to traffic. The current works have also been successfully completed, so according to the information published on 30 August, the entire reconstruction has been completed. This has allowed road traffic to resume on the northern flyover at Flórián Square towards Szentendrei út.

The bridges are now complete

The contractor informed our newspaper about the final stages of the work even before the bridge was opened to traffic; so – moving backwards in time – we will now take our readers through the situation prior to handover. The technical handover of the northern bridge was completed on 14 August, and the next important step was the commencement of the procedure for opening it to traffic.

Following the successful completion of the works, road traffic was able to resume on the northern bridge on 30 August.

This marked an important milestone in the project, as the overpass had been scheduled to open in time for the start of the new school term even under the original timetable.

Work on the project began one previous phase of the project, with asphalting work commencing on the northern bridge. As part of the refurbishment, work included, amongst other things, the installation of drainage elements, surface drains and drip edges; the application of protective coatings against salt corrosion; the installation of bridge fittings and vehicle retention barriers; and the installation of road markings and traffic control elements.

The surface was levelled using a special layer of concrete

An unexpected task that arose during construction was the correction of the bridge’s geometry, which was carried out whilst maintaining the original deadline. On the northern bridge – as on the southern bridge – the experts levelled the surface using fibre-reinforced, special thin concrete and synthetic resin mortar.

Fibre-reinforced concrete is a type of concrete in which various high-strength fibres are incorporated into the mix. These fibres are distributed throughout the concrete and, compared with conventional concrete, can improve its resistance to cracking, as well as the load-bearing capacity and durability of thinner levelling layers.

We should still expect changes to the traffic arrangements

However, the opening of the northern bridge does not yet mean that all the work at Flórián Square has been completed. Minor repairs and work to restore the at-grade junction at Flórián Square are still to be carried out.

Following the opening of the bridge, the contractors are now gradually dismantling the temporary traffic management arrangements and will then put the permanent traffic management arrangements in place within a few days.

The works are expected to last for around a week, during which time temporary traffic arrangements are to be expected at the junction. For this reason, road users are asked to pay attention to the signs put up; it is not advisable to rely solely on the traffic patterns they are used to.

The deadline for the final traffic management plan is 9 September . By this date, the final phase of the Flórián Square renovation – which will be noticeable to road users – may be completed.
