A railway bridge will link the sections of the Tokaj-kör route: cycling infrastructure development in the wine region continues
A new public procurement notice has been published for the development of the Tokaj-hegyalja cycle route network (the cycle route between Tokaj–Tarcal–Mád and Bodrogkeresztúr, which partly bypasses Tokaj Hill). A contractor is being sought for the construction of a railway overpass, which will cross the Szerencs–Sátoraljaújhely railway line within the town of Tokaj.
As we wrote earlier: the development is directly linked to the so-called Tokaj-kör cycle route. As part of the construction of the Tokaj-kör, a cycle path will be created around Kopasz Hill in Tokaj along the Tokaj–Tarcal–Bodrogkeresztúr–Tokaj route, covering approximately 19 kilometres. The section in question is situated directly on the south-eastern foothills of Tokaj Hill, in the railway cutting next to Bodrogkeresztúri Road.
A 42-metre, three-span bridge may be built
As part of an investment project in the town of Tokaj, a footbridge designed specifically for pedestrians and cyclists may be built over the railway line. The bridge, which is 42 metres long in total, consists of three spans: the two outer spans are 12 metres each, whilst the central span, which crosses over the railway line, has a span of 18 metres.
The structure is supported at a total of four points: on either side of the railway cutting, on the new abutments built at the top of the embankments, and on the two intermediate piers (columns) alongside the track.
The bridge’s structure will consist of lower-deck steel truss girders and so-called orthotropic (stiffened steel) deck slabs, meaning that cyclists will pass between the two lateral load-bearing main truss girders. The width of the cycle path on the bridge is 3.25 metres, which allows for comfortable and safe two-lane cycle traffic, as well as segregated pedestrian traffic, in accordance with official pedestrian and cycle load standards.
