Major traffic-calming and greening measures are set to begin on Budafoki Road

Plans for the refurbishment of the inner section of Budafoki út, between Szent Gellért tér and Karinthy Frigyes út, may be drawn up by Via Futura Kft. on behalf of the Újbuda Local Authority commission with a budget of approximately 54 million forints.

The development covers an area of almost 11,700 square metres – currently treeless, barren and overcrowded with parked cars – which, according to the plans, will be transformed from a space dedicated exclusively to cars into a much more liveable and welcoming urban space.

The inner section of Budafok will be partly one-way

The redevelopment will result in a significant reduction in traffic: the affected section will become one-way for private cars, whilst local bus services will continue to run smoothly in both directions in the interests of sustainable public transport.

The safety of pedestrians and cyclists is a key priority, so a two-way open cycle lane, spacious and clearly demarcated pedestrian areas, and zebra crossings made safer by traffic-calming ramps, improved street lighting and clear road markings are being created.

As part of the „Healthy Streets” initiative, the street can become a genuine community meeting place: outdoor seating areas and rest areas are being created here which anyone can use free of charge, with no obligation to buy anything, simply to relax or have a chat.

To alleviate the summer heat and the urban heat island effect, and to improve air quality, a large-scale greening project is also underway; new trees, flower beds with perennials and rain gardens that absorb and utilise rainwater will make Budafoki Road – currently shrouded in greyness – greener and more in harmony with nature.
