What is being built?
Work is taking place at the Monor service area on the M4 motorway under archaeological supervision
As one of the first and key steps in the works, the contractors have begun removing the topsoil from the site – according to Magyar Koncessziós Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő Zrt."s latest Facebook post. Although this may appear at first glance to be simple earthworks, the process is in fact complex: every single excavated area is examined by archaeologists, thus ensuring that any historical artefacts hidden beneath the surface are preserved.
During construction, the topsoil and subsoil excavated are continuously analysed. The topsoil is not removed from the site but is treated on-site and later reused during landscaping works, thereby reinforcing the project’s sustainability credentials.
This development has been reported on previously
Magyar Építők had previously reported on the construction of the Monor rest area reported on the construction of the Monor service area. The development is taking place along the M4 motorway in the Monor area and aims to create a modern, dual-sided service area serving traffic in both directions.
The aim of the project is to provide motorists with a safe and civilised place to stop, whilst operating at a higher capacity to meet growing traffic demands.
Generous capacity and family-friendly design
The new rest area will feature modern, well-organised car parks on both sides. On each side:
- 30 lorries
- 5 buses
- 34 passenger cars
will provide stopping points for them, three of which will be accessible to people with disabilities.
The development also places a strong emphasis on families: plans include modern garden furniture, a fitness park and a playground within the site.
Green solutions and sustainability
An important element of the project is environmentally conscious design. A total of approximately 37,000 square metres of green space will be created on both sides of the rest area, including:
- more than 230 trees,
- and 13,000 container-grown shrubs are being installed.
The facility also provides separate waste collection, meaning that sustainability plays a key role not only during construction but also during operation.
It could be completed by 2027
According to the current schedule, the Monor service area is due to be completed by August 2027, and will make a significant contribution to raising the standard of services along the M4 motorway.
