The well-known street is being given a new look with trees, green spaces and safer crossings.

There is much that can be said about Népszínház Street in Józsefváros, but it is certainly not boring. Its character is difficult to define; were it a person, it would undoubtedly be torn by moral dilemmas and internal contradictions. Opinions on the street have been divided for decades; one of its most distinctive features is that an extremely diverse range of cultures converge here.

The Józsefváros Local Council does not regard this as a problem, but rather as one of the street’s most important assets, and intends to build on this diversity in its development projects.

One part of this is the public space development project that has just been launched.

As part of the project, more than thirty trees will be planted, new green spaces will be created, and two new pedestrian crossings may be installed.

According to the public procurement notice states that the aim of the project is to make the street greener, improve conditions for pedestrians and make the public space more liveable.

The development concerns the section of Népszínház Street between Víg Street and Teleki Square . The deadline for submitting tenders is 14 August 2026.

36 new trees are to be planted on Népszínház Street

According to the plans, one of the most important elements of the development will be the planting of trees along the street. A total of 36 trees with deep root systems may be planted in the public space, three of which will be fitted with special tree grids. The remaining trees will be planted in newly created green spaces.

As part of the project, a total of 422 square metres of new green space will be created, which will involve not only planting vegetation but also landscaping the area. The green beds will be connected to the pedestrian and parking areas, and their boundaries will be marked by raised edging.

Two new pedestrian crossings may be built

Another important aspect of the project is improving pedestrian safety. The plans include the creation of two new pedestrian crossings without traffic lights.

One of the crossings may be built on the section between Kiss József Street and Fecske Street, whilst the other may be built on the section between Alföldi Street and Lujza Street.

The project involves the expansion of the pedestrian area on Népszínház Street at both locations. The new pedestrian crossings will be approximately 8.55 and 9.16 metres long, respectively.

New street lighting fixtures are also being installed. A new lamppost and light fitting may be installed at the junctions of Kiss József Street and Népszínház Street, and of Fecske Street and Népszínház Street.

Nearly 600 square metres of public space could be refurbished

As part of the project, major road construction works will also be carried out. According to the public procurement documentation,

  • 175 square metres of new tarmac pavement is being laid,
  • 422 square metres of green space is being created,
  • 358 linear metres of raised verges will be created for tree planting,
  • 42 linear metres of raised kerbs will be constructed at pedestrian crossings,
  • 26 linear metres of recessed edging will be installed.

The total public space construction project therefore covers a total of 597 square metres .

As part of the traffic engineering works, permanent road markings will be painted, a total of 33 KRESZ signs and supplementary signs will be erected, and 19 new posts will be installed to support the signs.

The revitalised section of street could be not only greener but also more comfortable, thanks to the 16 backless two-seater benches .
