The Flórián Square flyover has been raised
After thorough preparatory work, the experts raised the first support structure of the Flórián Square southern overpass at the Árpád Bridge bridgehead, according to a statement by Budapesti Közlekedési Központ (BKK). Six hydraulic jacks were used for the task, each moving a load of approximately 40–50 tonnes, with a total vertical displacement of approximately 2 centimetres. A major difficulty was that there is only 8-10 centimetres of space between the bridgehead and the end crossbeam, so they had to find a lifting device with sufficient lifting capacity that could be placed in the available opening. The general construction of the Flórián Square project is being carried out by KM Építő Kft. with the cooperation of HE-DO, as we regularly report.
After the lifting, the bridge deck was loaded onto six temporary piles, and then the removal of the old piles and the installation of new ones began. During the renovation of the overpasses, the structural framework will change, with the corner structures supporting the superstructure at the ends of the bridges having to withstand greater stresses. The more than 40-year-old spans will therefore be replaced by modern, so-called spherical glass spans. The bridge structure is expected to be lowered back into place next week.
The renovation of the southern flyover is well underway
Upgrades to the Southern Overpass at Flórián Square are ongoing; so far, work has included
- the existing bridge and retaining wall curbs were demolished in the spring and replaced by new curbs;
- the repair of the cantilevered part of the track slab has been completed along its entire length;
- repairs to the underbuildings are on schedule;
- the installation of steel bridge supports on the superstructure is nearing completion, and
- the application of salt and corrosion protection coatings on reinforced concrete surfaces is progressing as planned.
During the demolition and milling works, when the track surface and the sprayed insulation were removed, defects in the reinforced concrete track slab became visible and the unforeseen crust concrete was exposed, which required significant additional works and a technical intervention that was very different from the planned one. The repairs related to the unforeseen technical constraints will be completed by October, with the subsequent parts of the works scheduled to be completed by November. After that, traffic on the southern bridge can resume on Szentendrei út in the direction of Pest. The renovation and closure to traffic of the northern bridge will start afterwards.
The Flórián Square flyovers were last renovated in 2002-2003. Their modernisation is necessary to ensure that the section of road, which plays an important role in the transport of the capital and the agglomeration, can be used safely for decades to come.
