Historic motorway project, extensive renovations – MKIF closes the year with a video
This year, MKIF – Magyar Koncessziós Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő Zrt. has commenced and is continuously carrying out several large-scale construction, design and road management projects. On 24% of the approximately 1,300 km road network managed by the company, covering nearly 4.5 million m², renovated over the past year.
During the renovations, not only the wearing course was replaced, but also the damaged lower binder course and, in some places, even the base course. As part of the levelling work, 78 bridges and overpasses as well as 35 rest areas were also renovated. A total of almost 1 million tonnes of asphalt was used for the renovations.
Now, MKIF has summarised its activities for 2025 in a video and a Facebook post.
In 2025, renovation work was carried out on ten expressways: M1, M15, M3, M4, M30, M35, M7, M8, M85 and M86. Forty-two per cent of the work was carried out on the M3, where almost 1.8 million square metres of new surfacing was laid, while the second largest amount of work, on just under 1 million square metres, was carried out on the M1.
According to plans, pavement replacement and renovation work will continue in the spring. Information about the location and scope of the work is available here.
Work is underway on the expansion of the country's number one motorway.
Meanwhile, in September 2025, a historic project began: the expansion of the M1 motorway began on the main road between the M0 and the Concó (Bábolna area) rest area. Interestingly, preparatory work for the expansion has been ongoing since autumn 2024.
As summarised in their recent Facebook post, the track will be expanded to 2×3 lanes over a length of 78 km, with 1-1 full-value traffic lanes on each side that can be used as intelligent hard shoulders (ITS) for greater capacity and safety.
As part of the project (without claiming to be exhaustive):
- 72 bridges and overpasses will be rebuilt or completely rebuilt;
- 11 junctions will be modernised and 4 new ones will be built
- Six complex rest areas will be renovated and transformed into family-friendly rest areas.
Spectacular bridge to be built over the M7 motorway
Also worth mentioning – and even our summary does not cover all of MKIF's tasks and projects – is the new pedestrian and bicycle bridge (designed by Főmterv Mérnöki Tervező Zrt.).
As stated in the summary:
The 193-tonne, 80-metre-long, 4.5-metre-wide bridge structure was transported to the site in eight sections, which were assembled in pairs, so that during the lifting operation, two sections at a time, i.e. a total of four, had to be lifted into place with a crane.
Test loads may begin in early 2026, and the new bridge is expected to open to traffic in the summer of that year.
