Multifunctional university centre to be established on the southern shore of Lake Balaton
The University of Debrecen has published a call for tenders for the renovation of the Siófok Campus building complex in the EU Public Procurement Bulletin here. The deadline for submitting tenders is 20 January 2026.
The aim of the investment is to renovate the student accommodation and conference wings of the building complex located at Petőfi sétány 1, as well as the outdoor areas, as a result of which the building will be suitable for conferences related to the university's numerous economic, technical, tourism and health-related fields, and related accommodation for students.
At the beginning of 2025, we wrote about how the former Sió, then Hullám Hotel complex near the port would be home to the institution. At that time, the main task was to repair the windows, doors and roof.
Student accommodation: 100 beds, modern facilities
The western wing of the building consists of four levels – a basement, a ground floor and two upper floors – with staircases at the longitudinal ends. During construction, a significant portion of the existing rooms on each level will be reorganised, resulting in rooms that can accommodate approximately 100 people and meet today's expectations.
As part of the project, a complete mechanical renovation will be carried out: the existing gas boilers will be replaced and a cooling system will also be installed in the building. Due to the internal renovations, the electrical network will be renewed – including the high- and low-voltage systems and the fire alarm system – and an access control, camera and alarm system will also be installed.
Conference wing: the new centre of the campus
The conference wing, located between the student residence and the teaching wing, has two floors: a ground floor and a first floor. Following renovation, this part of the building will serve a multifunctional role and will operate as the main building on campus.
Due to its central location, the main entrance and reception area will be located on the Petőfi Promenade side. This is where the bar, restaurant, conference rooms, kitchen and service areas will be located. Several wet rooms will also be built during the design phase, taking into account the expected intensive use of the building. As part of the investment, the entire mechanical and electrical systems of the building wing will be renovated.
Outdoor area: renewable garden and well-kept entrances
Alongside the modernisation of the buildings, the exterior of the campus is also undergoing a transformation. A key consideration during the design process was the preservation of the existing trees and shrubs, which will be complemented by new decorative plantings.
The pedestrian and vehicle entrances on the Petőfi promenade are emphasised with architectural and landscape design elements, while an outdoor terrace is being created between the student residence and the conference wing, in a section sheltered from the wind. Barriers are also being installed at two points on the property to regulate traffic.
The plot area is 9,249 square metres, and the existing built-up area is 2,760.05 square metres, which will remain unchanged during the investment. The total renovation area covered by the basic offer is 2,505.02 square metres.
The successful tenderer will be responsible for preparing the necessary product and cover designs and making them available on an ongoing basis during the construction period. The investment does not require a building permit.
Strengthening the university's presence in Siófok
In the spring of 2024, the university and city leaders signed an agreement stipulating that the University of Debrecen's newest campus would be established in Siófok, operating under the name DE Siófok Campus.
The aim of the cooperation agreements concluded with the municipal government and the Siófok Vocational Training Centre is to integrate Siófok into the Hungarian higher education system.
Rector Zoltán Szilvássy previously stated: „The University of Debrecen will offer a wide range of courses at the Siófok Campus. There are priorities and there will be areas of emphasis that will develop along the way. It is already clear that economics and tourism and hospitality education, which are extremely successful in Debrecen, will be very important at the beginning. It is likely that technical sciences will play a particularly important role. In addition, we will launch courses in all competitive sectors of the health industry.”
