Road building
Oradea’s main north-south road has been relieved of traffic congestion thanks to a complex junction
We recently reported on the development of the multi-level junction on Bihari Road in Oradea, and on 17 August, work was completed on another major road development project in the city, carried out by the Bihar County Council, the National Road Infrastructure Management Company (CNAIR) and staff from the Oradea Mayor’s Office. As we learnt from the Bihor County Council’s statement:
The two underpasses and overpasses on Aradi Road (Main Road 79) in Oradea have been opened to traffic. This project will significantly ease traffic congestion in the shopping centre area, whilst also providing a direct link between the city and Oradea Airport.
At the same time, the pedestrian underpass was also opened, linking the Jumbo and ERA shopping centres beneath the Oradea ring road. With the completion of this project, six of the eight redesigned junctions planned by the Bihor County Council have now been opened to traffic.
The underpass was completed in just over half a year
A complex junction has been constructed by staff from the consortium comprising the companies Selina and Drum Asfalt: the underpass constructed at the junction of the Oradea ring road and Aradi Road has a total length of 406 metres; an underground pedestrian passageway has also been built alongside it.
Work on this section began in January 2026 and has now been handed over to the public, together with the flyover, which has a total length of 535 metres. The structure spans the roundabout that provides access to the ERA Shopping Park, the Dedeman DIY store and the Nagyvárad Shopping Centre. Work on this section began in September 2025.
Eight road crossings are being built
The development project, totalling more than 5 billion forints, forms part of the Bihar County Council’s main road development programme, which involves the construction of a total of eight overpasses and underpasses on the town’s busiest roads.
Work has already been completed on six of these. The Fugyivásárhely underpass was opened to traffic on 21 November 2025, the flyover near the Metro shopping centre was opened on 8 July 2026, and on 10 July the flyover at the exit leading from Nagyvárad towards Szatmárnémeti was opened. In addition, the railway-tram underpass was opened on 14 August.
Work is currently underway on an underpass being built at the junction of Tudor Vladimirescu, Oneștilor and Lăpușului streets, whilst the eighth crossing will be the flyover being built on Püspöki út. A public procurement procedure for this project will be launched shortly.
