A 51 billion forint development programme has been launched, specifically to modernise drinking water networks.

Over the coming years, drinking water networks may be upgraded as part of a 51 billion forint development programme, with the aim of reducing water wastage – László Gajdos announced on his social media page on Monday.

According to the summary of MTI, the Minister responsible for the environment justified the call for proposals by stating that hundreds of thousands of cubic metres of drinking water are lost every day in Hungary due to ageing water networks. Local authorities, water utility providers and other operators may apply for funding under this development scheme.

Applications for funding aimed at reducing drinking water losses in the network and reconstructing the drinking water network may be submitted in several application rounds, with priority given to projects implemented in the four least-developed regions (Northern Great Plain, Southern Great Plain, Northern Hungary and Southern Transdanubia).

Funding is being provided for the transition to modern technology and network reconstruction

The scheme also supports the installation of remote meter reading, automated operation, pressure management and other state-of-the-art solutions. These investments not only reduce water wastage but also make the drinking water supply safer and more reliable.

The minister considers it particularly important that a significant proportion of the funds should be channelled to the most disadvantaged regions.

‘The renovation of water networks is a less spectacular investment than a new road or a new building, yet these are the developments that will determine the safe functioning of communities and the quality of everyday life for decades to come,’ he said. He added:

„Protecting the natural environment is not just about preserving natural assets, but also about managing one of our most important natural resources – clean drinking water – responsibly.”
