A huge brush was driven through the Sopron tunnel on the M85 – with video

In December, it will be two years since the Sopron Tunnel, which was opened on the final section of the M85, and where the operator recently carried out a crucial operation MKIF Zrt.. The two tunnel tubes were cleaned in three stages to ensure that traffic could continue uninterrupted. According to a video posted by MKIF, a machine fitted with a giant brush and a water tank was driven through the tunnels, whilst in hard-to-reach areas the tunnel surfaces were cleaned using hand tools.

According to the operating company’s report, dust and dirt are constantly accumulating on the tunnel walls, in the drainage system and on the technical equipment:

A thorough wash carried out twice a year is important not only for aesthetic reasons, but also for road safety. A total of 16,000 square metres of wall surface – equivalent to almost three football pitches – was machine-washed.

„And then, in early October, it will be time for the annual maintenance of the tunnel’s equipment,” predicted Tamás Balassa-Berek, operations manager, in the video. „However, this will have to be carried out whilst the tunnel is completely closed, as it will involve, amongst other things, checking the fire alarms, which necessarily entails closing the tunnel,” he added.
