On Main Road 8, the wearing course is being replaced on four sections, totalling approximately 3.6 kilometres, whilst on the section of Main Road 81 within Fejér County, new base and wearing courses are being laid over a distance of more than one kilometre.

Road resurfacing work is currently underway on two major main roads in the Transdanubia region: on Main Road 8 between Ajka and Bakonygyepes, and on Main Road 81, where specialists are working on a section in Fejér County with a severely deformed road surface. A total of around 5,000 tonnes of asphalt will be laid during the two projects – Dávid Vitézy, Minister for Transport and Investment, reported on the works via his social media page. In an interview he also spoke about the fact that the road renovation budget would be substantially increased so that significantly more funding would be allocated to the renovation of the national road network.

Main Road 8 is being upgraded across four sections

The Magyar Közút is carrying out large-scale resurfacing work on four separate sections of Main Road 8: at Ajka-Bakonygyepes, at Székpuszta, at Devecser, and between Borszörcsök and Somlóvásárhely.

The works cover a total of approximately 3.6 kilometres, during which the worn-out asphalt wearing course will be replaced across 28,000 square metres of road surface.

The affected sections will be resurfaced across the full width of the road. Following the removal of the worn surface course, hot-rolled asphalt with a higher load-bearing capacity will be laid. Approximately 2,800 tonnes of asphalt will be used for this. As part of the works, road markings will be repainted and damaged or worn-out road fittings will also be replaced.

Main Road 8 is one of Hungary’s most important east-west road axes: it runs from Székesfehérvár via Veszprém, Ajka and Körmend to Szentgotthárd on the Austrian border. Within Veszprém County, Main Road 8 serves the Várpalota–Veszprém–Ajka–Devecser corridor, channelling transit and freight traffic towards Western Hungary and Austria. More than 7 million vehicles travel along the Veszprém–Körmend section each year, transporting some 10–12 million tonnes of goods.

On the 81, the binder course is also being replaced

On the Fejér County section of Main Road 81, which links Székesfehérvár with Győr, the road surface had become so severely deformed that a permanent 60 km/h speed limit had to be introduced over a stretch of more than one kilometre.
On 13 October, specialists began milling the worn-out asphalt across the entire affected section of the road. On this section, the works involve not only replacing the wearing course but also renewing the binder course: following the milling, both layers will be rebuilt.
A total of around 2,200 tonnes of asphalt will be used for the works. In addition, the verges will be renewed and new road markings will be painted.

They are working whilst half the carriageway is closed

Work is taking place on both main roads with traffic restricted to one carriageway. Traffic is being directed by flaggers at the work sites, and a 40 km/h speed limit is in force, so traffic congestion may occur from time to time.
A no-overtaking restriction is also in force on the sections of Main Road 8 affected by the works, whilst on sections that have already been milled or are awaiting the application of road markings, vehicles may travel at a speed limit of 60 km/h. The renovation of Main Road 8 is scheduled to be completed on 12 November, weather permitting.
