Szépjuhászné station gets a makeover with a new look and modern services

As part of the MÁV national development programme, the reconstruction of the Szépjuhászné station of the Children's Railway is already underway, at a cost of approximately 300 million forints.

Two major infrastructure development programmes have been launched or are about to be launched in the coming months under MÁV, one involving the renovation of 1,000 kilometres of railway line at a cost of approximately HUF 800 billion, jointly financed by the European Investment Bank and the national budget, and the other involving the renovation of more than 30 railway stations in 14 counties, financed from MÁV's own resources and the Hungarian Village Programme.

The latter includes the reconstruction of the Szépjuhászné station of the Children's Railway, said Zsolt Hegyi, CEO of the MÁV Group, at a press conference on the renovation of the railway station on 11 December 2025.

As we previously reported, the total cost of the station renovation programme is approximately 15 billion forints, of which the work carried out at Szépjuhászné station will cost around 300 million forints.

He emphasised that the renovation is significant in terms of the Children's Railway, tourism in the capital, and the Hungarian railway infrastructure in a broader sense. The line is not only of great historical value, but also plays a significant role in tourism and education. The Children's Railway is one of the top 15 attractions in Budapest, a major domestic tourist destination, and is also visited by large numbers of foreigners, he added.

The works will be completed for next year's season.

He explained that Szépjuhászné station will be restored to its original appearance from 1949, and its functions will also have to be reconsidered, as passenger traffic is exceptionally high and more and more families are stopping here on their trips.

Work on the station began on 11 December 2025 and will be completed in time for next year's peak season. The façade and roof will be renovated, the doors and windows will be replaced, the interior will be painted, the flooring will be replaced, the electrical network and heating will be modernised, and the toilets will be refurbished.

They will preserve the condition of the works of art, tidy up the surroundings, replace the external cladding, renew the green areas, install new street furniture, renovate the drinking fountain and passenger information elements, and adapt them to the uniform image.

Maintenance work is ongoing on the Children's Railway.

The CEO of MÁV mentioned that several track maintenance projects are currently underway on the Children's Railway, citing the reconstruction of the Távcső Street railway crossing between Csillebérc and Széchenyi Hill as an example.

The complete renovation of the Konkoly-Thege Miklós út crossing has recently been completed – as reported in our newspaper reported on in our newspaper. Last year, heavy machinery was used to regulate the tracks, replace stones and replace sleepers, and track maintenance is currently underway on Széchenyi Hill and in Hűvösvölgy. Last year, the museum at Hűvösvölgy station was renovated, the CEO added.
