This is how the Gyöngyös junction on the M3 is being upgraded – video

This year, resurfacing work is being carried out across a total of 632,000 square metres on the motorway network managed by MKIF.

Although the upgrading works have already been completed, MKIF will still be refurbishing a significant length of road in 2026 on the road network it manages. According to the company’s social media post, a total of 632,000 square metres of road surfacing will be renewed on the expressway network in 2026. In addition to this, three bridges and five rest areas will also be refurbished this year.

Almost half of this year’s renovation works will take place on the M3 motorway. On this motorway, the worn-out binder and/or wearing courses will be replaced over an area of more than 330,000 square metres. Significant work will also be carried out in 2026 on sections not covered by the M1-es autópálya extension: here, a further 215,000 square metres of the carriageway will be resurfaced.

The MKIF also illustrates the work currently underway with a new video: this offers a glimpse into the works taking place in the vicinity of the Gyöngyös-Nyugat junction on the M3 motorway. Here, not only is the worn road surface being replaced, but the crash barriers are also being renewed, thereby further improving road safety on the affected section of the motorway.

To conclude, here are a few figures that also refer back to the alignment mentioned above:

As part of this series of investments on a historic scale, between 2023 and 2025, 700 km of expressways were resurfaced across an area of approximately 13 million square metres. A total of 2.5 million tonnes of asphalt – roughly 100,000 lorryloads – was used for the works over the course of three years.

By way of comparison: Hungary’s annual asphalt production stands at 4–4.5 million tonnes. In addition to the large-scale resurfacing of roads, 315 bridges and 68 rest areas were also refurbished during this period.
