Salgótarján's modernist centre to be rebuilt

An open call for ideas has been announced for the redevelopment of the town centre of Salgótarján Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium. The competition is seeking proposals for a development plan that is in keeping with the spirit of contemporary, liveable and sustainable cities.

The legacy of the 1960s must be taken into account

As they write: the city centre regeneration of Salgótarján City of County Rights is a unique opportunity to promote the development of the city and strengthen local community identity.

The development of the city has always been closely linked to its geographical location and its industrial past. The valley town, situated at the meeting point of the Karancs, Medves and Cserhat mountains, is situated in a unique natural environment, which is part of the town's identity.

The town centre took on its current character between 1960 and 1985, when a large part of the previous building stock was demolished and replaced by a modern centre.

A pedestrian-friendly and safe city centre

The economic changes of the past decades and the changing needs of the population have caused the city centre to lose its original function. Buildings have deteriorated and public spaces no longer meet the challenges of modern times. It is therefore important that new innovative ideas and design concepts are introduced into the planning of the regeneration of Salgótarján's city centre, which will enhance the city's livability, sustainability and aesthetic values.

The aim of the competition is to develop building and landscape architecture concepts that promote the development of a modern, pedestrian-friendly and safe city centre, taking into account the specific characteristics and built heritage of Salgótarján. The competition invites detailed proposals for the renewal of the Main Square and its immediate surroundings, as well as ideas for a functional study of the city centre and for improving its transport connections.

"We want to pay special attention to improving the proportion of green areas and renewing the quality of paving in public spaces, thus contributing to the future development of Salgótarján and the achievement of its sustainability goals", they write.
