Nearly €2 billion to implement the largest street lighting modernisation programme in Kaposvár's history

A centrally controlled, so-called smart street lighting system will be set up in Kaposvár by next spring, announced Mayor Károly Szita. At a press conference held in the Somogy county seat, it was announced that the project will involve replacing all the city's street lights and expanding the existing network.

Almost 10 thousand lamps to be replaced

Károly Szita said, according to the audio recording sent to MTI, that the development, which is being implemented with municipal funds of about 1.7 billion HUF, is the largest street lighting reconstruction programme in the history of Kaposvár. The project involves replacing all the 9,628 lamps in the city's streets and installing 175 new lamps, the latter to "connect" the Töröcskei gated community to the street lighting system.

He stressed,

Thanks to modern LED light sources and smart solutions, 40 percent of Kaposvár's annual street lighting costs of HUF 550 million can be saved.

The system becomes demand-driven

Tamás Szőke, the commercial director of Schréder Magyarország Zrt., the manufacturer of the luminaires, said that the advantage of the modernisation is that the operation and consumption of the luminaires can be monitored centrally and their brightness can be adjusted according to the needs. Kaposvár will be the first city in Hungary where smart street lighting will cover the entire municipality, he added.
