85 km of railways, 24 stations to be rebuilt and electrified
One of Hungary's busiest railway lines may finally receive a long-awaited upgrade, according to Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium conditional public procurement tender: A designer and contractor are being sought for the suburban development of the Kőbánya-Kispest – Ócsa – Kecskemét railway line section.
The deadline for applications for the Kőbánya-Kispest-Ócsai szőlők-Kecskemét railway line development is 5 December 2025. The task is to modernise and electrify around 85 kilometres of railway and renovate all the stations concerned, for a total of around HUF 283 billion.
From Kőbánya to Ócsa
In the first phase, 20.5 kilometres of the project will be upgraded between Kőbánya-Kispest and Ócsai Grapes railway station. This will be accompanied by the development of railway lines, roads and stations. This will take approximately HUF 129 billion and four years.
The authorised speed of the line section is 120 km/h. The maximum permissible axle load is 225kN.
Main quantities:
- Line km to be upgraded: 20,5 (double track)
- number of siding to be built: 56
- overhead line kilometres to be built: 19,3
- platforms to be built: 18
- works: 1 major railway structure, 1 road overpass, 3 road underpasses, 3 pedestrian underpasses, construction and reconstruction of 5 small works
- installation of lighting equipment at stations and stops: 10 pieces
- alternating heater: 50 pieces
- noise barrier wall: 33.260 m2
- building, shed, rain shelter: 9 buildings, 2 rain shelters, 7 sheds
- the creation of a P+R car park with around 450 spaces and 700 bicycle storage spaces in 8 locations.
From Ócsa to Kecskemét
The second phase will cover 64.6 kilometres, where the winner will also convert the currently unelectrified line into a modern suburban railway line in four years, at a cost of around HUF 154 billion. The suburban development of the Ócsai szőlők - Kecskemét railway line includes the development of roads and stations, as well as utilities.
The authorised speed of the line section is 120 km/h. The maximum permissible axle load is 225kN.

- number of detours to be built: 88
- km of overhead electric lines to be built: 65,8
- platforms to be built: 23
- works: 1 road overpass, 2 pedestrian underpasses, construction and reconstruction of 7 small works
- installation of 16 station and stop lighting systems
- alternating heater: 88 pieces
- noise barrier wall: 7 905 m2
- buildings, platforms, rain shelters: 14 buildings, 18 rain shelters, 7 platforms
- the creation of a P+R car park with approximately 617 spaces in 12 locations and 1,750 bicycle parking spaces in 16 locations.
