A Hungarian–Croatian consortium is implementing an irrigation system based on water abstraction from the Drava
With the participation of SZABADICS, a new irrigation system comprising a network of pipes stretching nearly 17 kilometres is being built in Croatia.
Work is set to begin shortly on Verőce–Drávamente County (Virovitičko-podravska županija) is set to begin: 447 hectares of farmland could become irrigable using water from the Drava River through the construction of SZABADICS Zrt. and BISTRA d.o.o. projects – as reported in the European Union Public Procurement Bulletin.
A contract worth 8.28 million euros (approximately 3.3 billion forints) has been awarded following a public procurement tender for the construction of a new irrigation system in the Croatian municipality of Lukač (Lukácsháza), which proved to be a more favourable bid than the estimated value of 9 million euros.
A network of power lines stretching nearly 17 kilometres is being built
The aim of the project, funded by the Verőce–Drávamente County Council, is to construct a state-of-the-art community irrigation system that will provide a water supply to farmers in the Turanovac and Gornje Bazje areas, which form part of the municipality of Lukač.
The system draws water from the Drava River, which is pumped out via a water intake structure. As part of the project, the following will be built:
- pumping station,
- settling and equalising tank,
- transformer station,
- as well as a pressure pipeline network nearly 16.8 kilometres long.
The network comprises 38 control chambers and 218 irrigation connection points, and the operation of the entire system is supported by a remote monitoring and control system.
Even the plants with the highest water requirements won’t go thirsty
The capacity of the irrigation system has been tailored to the water requirements of the crops with the highest water demands – primarily tomatoes and peppers – thus ensuring an adequate water supply for the various crops grown.
Accordingly, the maximum operating capacity is 290 litres per second, whilst the installed pumps will be capable of delivering a total of 300 litres of water per second. The irrigation season will run from April to September.
