The largest and most complex domestic education investment in recent years handed over

Published

The construction of WHB and LATEREX on 13 hectares of land has created an unparalleled complex of buildings, which, along with the institutions concerned, is a major step forward for the whole of Dunakeszi.

On 31 August, the Dunakeszi Student Quarter was inaugurated, consisting of seven buildings with a total useful area of 30,000 square metres, covering an area of around 123,000 square metres. The complex, commissioned by Építési és Közlekedési Minisztérium and built by WEST HUNGÁRIA BAU Kft. and LATEREX Építő Zrt., is the largest Hungarian educational investment in recent years. The inauguration event on Saturday morning was attended by János Lázár, Minister of Construction, Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Dr. Bence Tuzson, Minister of Justice.

These are the buildings created by the project

The Dunakeszi Student Quarter, built on a 13-hectare site based on the plans of Incorso Design, was the largest development in the Pest County town in recent decades. The project, which was launched in March 2022, resulted in the construction of the following buildings:

  • Béla IV High School with 20 classrooms;
  • the VSZC Lányi Ferenc Technical and Vocational School with 26 classrooms and associated workshops;
  • a gymnasium attached to each of the high school and technical school wings, with a total floor area of 2,500 square metres, with a multifunctional design;
  • a communal kitchen and dining area with seating and dining facilities for 450 people;
  • and a swimming pool of almost 5,000 square metres, with facilities for swimming competitions and water polo matches.

The high school gymnasium was built with a bleachers

As we have reported in previous articles, the two school buildings have a net floor area of 26 569 square metres, with spacious common areas and lobbies. In addition to classrooms and classrooms, they also house classrooms, an administration and staff wing, canteens and three servants' apartments.

For both schools, an 1185 square metre gymnasium of three sections, a smaller semi-gym and a physical education room were built. The gymnasium is also connected to the high school gym by a 265-seat grandstand.

Spacious and bright spaces in the restaurant

The 1,784-square-metre kitchen and restaurant, which can accommodate 450 people, is located between the two secondary schools, making it suitable for hosting city events. Thanks to its design, the building complex is not only spacious but also bright. We wrote more about it in this article: when it was tested during a trial run.

The sports pool, named after the Olympic champion water polo player Zoltán Dömötör, has a 25×33 m swimming pool on the ground floor, accessible through the lobby. The development also includes a training pool, changing rooms, offices, storage rooms and walkways. The gym, snack bars, bleachers, toilets and other service facilities are located upstairs.

In addition to this, two rubber-covered sports fields have been built in the schoolyards for the two secondary schools. These included a 160-metre running track with three rows of bleachers, 60-metre flat running tracks, and triple jump and long jump tracks.

Swimming pool water reused for irrigation

More than 65,000 evergreens, shrubs and perennials were planted, and 2500 trees were planted, including benches, benches and garden walkways. The water for the irrigation system is supplied by water from the swimming pool, after careful purification and filtration, with an eye to environmental sustainability.

As part of the project, a 15,000 square metre woodland was also installed next to the complex, separating the facility from the city's suburban residential area. In front of the swimming pool, a public park has been created with large green areas for public use.

Another prominent green feature of the Dunakeszi Student Quarter is the green roof covering the dining area. The area is in fact an enclosed landscaped courtyard, surrounded by the 'C' shaped buildings of the high school and the vocational school.

The Student Quarter is easily accessible from the main road 2 and the M2 motorway

The necessary infrastructure has also been created to ensure adequate transport links: the building complex can be accessed by car from three directions, and a new roundabout has been built at its entrance. The most important development in this regard is the access road built to the north, which directs traffic from the complex directly to the 2113 access road, which was opened in 2019, which connects the southern border of Göd with the M2 motorway via the M2 motorway.

The areas around the school are open to the public and can be used by anyone. Accordingly, the area is accessible on foot and by bicycle from the north, south and east from the surrounding neighbourhoods. The complex is also accessible by public transport, with bus stops and shelters.

The large-scale project also includes a 300-space car park and bicycle storage facilities.

The largest school construction project ever in the history of Hungary

In his speech at the inauguration ceremony, Minister of Foreign Affairs Péter Szijjártó emphasized that as a resident of Dunakeszi, he is proud that the town has recently become synonymous with the development and modernization of Hungarian education.

He recalled that 7-8 years ago, one of the biggest school investments of that time was inaugurated in a similar round, and now the result of the biggest school construction ever in the history of Hungary can be presented. A gymnasium, a technical school, a vocational school, community spaces, a sports hall, a swimming pool and "a lot of records that have been set here", he added. The Minister thanked the builders, all those involved in the construction and those who "will inhabit and populate this institution".

It is not only the size of the investment that can make the school famous

In his speech at the event, Justice Minister Bence Tuzson said that the completed buildings of the institution must be brought to life for those who will study there. "It is also the task of the students and the staff to create the traditions of the student quarter," he added.

"The responsibility is also great because the image that is created of this school will be decisive in the long term, and if the image of this school is that it is a good school, worth going to, worth bringing children here, because not only the building is beautiful, but the teaching is also of high quality, then this can be a national reputation", he stressed, adding that in this case we can not only talk about the fact that this is the largest educational investment in the country, but it is one of the best schools in the country.
