Paks II: Two-thirds of the population supports development

For three years now, survey results have shown support levels above 65 per cent.

Századvég conducted a survey on the social acceptance of the Paks expansion on behalf of Paks II. Zrt. commissioned a survey on the social acceptance of the Paks expansion. Based on the research conducted in the autumn, 66.41% of respondents support the investment, while 29.41% disagree with the project and 4.21% did not take a position or did not answer the question.

The company conducting the investment website also reveals that the representative survey was conducted with personal data collection between 15 September and 10 October 2025. Support for the project has been above 65% for three years now, reaching 75.3% in September 2022.

Nearly 90 per cent of people would rely on domestic power plants

Based on the opinion poll, it can also be concluded that the majority of respondents (62.81%TP3939T) see nuclear energy as the key to ensuring a secure and continuous power supply for the country, while natural gas ranks second with 11.41%TP3939T and solar energy in third place with 7.41% as the most important factors in this area.

The vast majority of respondents (83.5%) believe that nuclear energy and renewable energy sources complement each other well in domestic energy production. 87.41% of respondents would rather rely on domestic power plants to meet their electricity needs, which is consistent with the finding that 73.61% believe that the construction of new blocks primarily means reducing energy dependence. In addition, they see significant potential in keeping electricity prices at an affordable level (59.5%) and in stimulating the economy and creating jobs (51.5%).

Less than two months remain until the first concrete pour.

The news published on the website also refers to the current status of the project: the installation of structural concrete is underway at the investment site. Preparations are currently underway to ensure that the construction of the foundation slab for the first technological building, i.e. the first concrete pouring, can begin on 5 February 2026 in the work pit of Unit 5. According to the terminology of the International Atomic Energy Agency, this milestone will mark the start of construction of the new Paks nuclear power plant.
