Spectacular reductions in energy and water consumption, less waste, new electric vehicles in the company fleet and award-winning green projects.

For the fourth time, it has published a comprehensive sustainability report for the Market Csoport, confirming its leading role in the green transition of the construction industry. The market-leading building construction group achieved significant results in reducing its environmental impact in 2024, while also setting new standards in social responsibility and sustainable corporate governance, according to a statement sent to our newspaper. The report was prepared using a hybrid methodology: it is partly aligned with the requirements of the new EU CSRD directive, supplemented by a data structure in accordance with GRI standards.

They started a trend

In 2022, Market was the first domestic construction company to publish a sustainability report that complies with international standards, they write. Since then, the company has incorporated ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) considerations into its operations at a strategic level, the results of which are clearly reflected in the 2024 data.

„We are proud that Market is a market leader not only in terms of construction volume, but also in its commitment to sustainability. Our 2024 results prove that green operations and economic success go hand in hand. For us, ESG is a strategic direction that guarantees the long-term competitiveness and value creation of Market Csoport. I am grateful to the entire team for their dedicated work in contributing to the achievement of our common goals every day.”

– said Sándor Scheer, founder and CEO of Market Építő Zrt..

Outstanding results compared to the 2019 base year

The Market Csoport shows signs of consistent progress in several key areas compared to the 2019 base year. The following 2024 results confirm the success of the sustainability strategy:

  • Greenhouse gases (GHG): GHG intensity per revenue decreased by 38% compared to the base year (this indicator remained at a decrease of 37.5% at the end of 2023).
  • The amount of waste produced was 57% less than in 2019 (in 2023, this figure was 39%).
  • Communal water consumption fell by 85% compared to the base year (while a decrease of 70% was recorded in 2023).
  • Electricity consumption decreased by 24% compared to 2019 levels (the decrease in 2023 was 3.7%).

Innovation for a sustainable future

Market Csoport also supports the achievement of sustainability goals through continuous technological developments. In 2024, the first 100% electric concrete mixer was successfully tested, which will be able to participate in construction projects without emitting harmful substances in the future. The company's fleet has been expanded with 23 new electric vehicles, bringing the total number of hybrid or purely electric vehicles in its fleet to 30%, saving around 95 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

Awareness raising and award-winning projects

The company also emphasises sharing sustainability knowledge. In addition to internal awareness-raising programmes, the company's projects are also excellent examples of putting green thinking into practice:

  • Corvinus Gellért Campus: The LEED Gold-certified university building was presented as an international model project at a prestigious German environmental conference, the Deutsche Umwelthilfe meeting on „Sustainable Building Renovation”, highlighting its solutions focusing on renewable energy sources and biodiversity.
  • BEM Center: The mixed-use office building won the Commercial Development of the Year award at the Real Estate Awards awards ceremony, recognising its sustainable architectural concept that creates an energy-efficient and modern working environment.
  • BudaPart DOWNTOWN: The office building's high occupancy rates confirm the growing market demand for certified, sustainable buildings.

Recognition for the green shift

The commitment of Market Csoport is also recognised by independent professional organisations. In the ESG TOP 40 list compiled by HVG and Planet Fanatics’ Network, the company ranked third among domestic companies in the environmental dimension. This recognition confirms that Market Csoport is achieving a genuine green transition in the Hungarian construction industry through its consistent work and intends to continue to be a pioneer of innovative and sustainable solutions in the future.
