The cloakroom of the National Museum is undergoing renovation
According to plans, at the end of June, during Museum Night, the public will be able to see the renovated room housing the Hungarian coronation mantle at the Hungarian National Museum for the first time. László L. Simon, the project manager responsible for the work and former head of the institution, spoke about this at a press conference on Friday.
From the more than 800 million forints previously allocated for renovation work, several other permanent exhibition venues, as well as the air conditioning system in the coin collection storage room, can be renovated in the museum, in addition to the Coronation Robe Hall. The special display case in the mantle hall will be made by an Italian company for approximately 140 million forints, while the architectural work will cost less than 300 million forints.
said László L. Simon, who also presented the visual designs created by Narmer Építészeti Stúdió.
The room will be air-conditioned using the same technology that was used during the construction of the Seuso exhibition.
„For more than four decades, we have been storing the coronation mantle, the most important relic of Hungarian cultural history, in the same place and in the same form. The room where it is located has long been in need of comprehensive renovation. It is interesting to note that the mantle does not occupy a central position in the room, but this will also change, as all other artefacts will be removed from the space,” said László L. Simon.
He mentioned that the room will be air-conditioned using the same technology that was used during the construction of the Seuso exhibition. This will require drilling through the ceiling in two places. In addition to the unbreakable display case, a rescue box will also be constructed to protect the cloak in the event of a natural disaster.
It was announced at the event that a contract with the construction contractor could be signed next week.
