Romania’s largest Lidl shopping centre is being built in Bucharest

The former industrial area of Bucharest’s Obor district, currently undergoing regeneration, is set to gain another key feature: as part of the SkyLight Residence project, Romania’s largest Lidl store is to be built – reports profit.ro. The developer, InteRo Property Development, began work on the property development, valued at around one billion euros, last summer.

The project is being carried out on the site of the former Aversa factory; upon completion, it will comprise a total of 486,000 square metres of built-up area, as well as almost 28,000 square metres of green space and parks.

The department store is being built on a site covering more than 10,000 square metres

The new Lidl shop is being built on a 10,418-square-metre plot , with a retail area of approximately 3,265 square metres .

One of the interesting aspects of the project is that the retail unit is being integrated into a large-scale, mixed-use urban development project. In recent years, Lidl has been adopting increasingly flexible formats in order to ensure it remains accessible even in densely built-up, central urban areas.

The Obor district is a particularly suitable location for this: it is one of Bucharest’s major commercial and transport hubs, with high levels of pedestrian and road traffic. With the development of the SkyLight Residence project, the former industrial area is gradually being transformed into a new, mixed-use neighbourhood.

Energy-efficient technical solutions

In designing the new shop, Lidl has also incorporated energy efficiency and sustainability considerations. Among other things, the building features LED lighting controlled by presence sensors, as well as heat recovery solutions integrated into the air-conditioning system. According to the developer, the new store will not only serve a commercial purpose, but will also form an important part of the neighbourhood’s evolving urban environment.

More than 285 million euros are being spent on the expansion of the Lidl in Romania

Meanwhile, Lidl’s network in Romania continues to expand. The retailer recently opened its 400th store in Romania, and has announced an investment budget of more than €285 million for the 2026 financial year to develop its network. This is 56 per cent higher than the amount announced last year.

The outlet currently under construction in Obor, Bucharest, could be one of the key investments in this expansion strategy: it differs from Lidl’s traditional store formats in terms of both its size and its urban location.
