The „Dacia Road” project has officially been launched, under which the car factory will be connected to the A1 motorway via a 10 km expressway link.

The direct motorway link between Mioveni and the A1 motorway is a key strategic investment for the Romanian economy. As the A1 motorway links Bucharest to the Hungarian border at Nagylak (where it connects directly to the M43 motorway), it is the most important element of the Dacia car factory’s transport route. This investment, which has been awaited for decades, will directly boost Romanian industrial exports by modernising the logistics infrastructure of the Transylvanian car factory, whilst also relieving pressure on the overburdened road network around Pitești.

They can finally issue the call for tenders

Preparations for the expressway known as „Dacia Road” have now officially begun, following the Romanian ministry (CNAIR) putting the project’s economic and technical parameters out for public consultation – reports economedia.ro. The investment will eliminate the logistical bottlenecks at the local Dacia plant; its total budget amounts to 2.68 billion lei gross (approx. 140 billion forints). Funding will be provided by EU funds under the 2021–2027 Romanian Transport Programme, as well as from the central government budget; the project will take 36 months to complete.

Eight complex structures will have to be built due to the difficult terrain

The central element of the project is a 9.89-kilometre, 2×2-lane expressway section with a crown width of 21.5 metres and a carriageway width of 7 metres in each direction.

A further 5.2 kilometres of junction ramps will be connected to the network: the one-way branches will be constructed with a carriageway width of 6 metres, whilst the two-way branches will have a carriageway width of 9 metres. Eight complex engineering structures – including bridges, flyovers and viaducts – will be constructed along the route; due to the topographical and geological conditions, enhanced seismic safety standards are being applied in their design.
