Preparations have started for the renewal of the Budapest-Hegyeshalom railway line on the Biatorbágy-Szárliget section
The experts of MÁV Zrt. and the contractor MÁV FKG conducted a site visit on the section of the main line between Biatorbágy and Szárliget in Bergeshalm, in order to clarify the technical content of the renovation, announced the MÁV Zrt. Communication Directorate on 31 August 2023.
As they wrote, the scheduled, regularly performed so-called pull-out force tests on the 29-kilometre section of the line have established that the previously detected deterioration rate has accelerated due to this year's heavy rains and the heat of the past weeks, making it necessary to reschedule the renovation works, originally planned for the first quarter of next year, and to carry them out as early as possible.
The intervention will be implemented on the basis of the plans for the infrastructure development programme already prepared by MÁV in 2019, but postponed several times due to lack of funds.
The work will be carried out by MÁV"s subsidiary, MÁV FKG. The technical details are still being finalised, but the work on the affected section of track will include replacing the superstructure and screening the ballast. Preparations for the track closure are currently underway, and construction is expected to begin in mid-September 2023, with each track being closed continuously, and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The timetable will also be modified during the restriction. The modified timetables will of course take into account the fact that it is one of the busiest railways in the domestic long-distance and suburban segment, and that it also has a significant international passenger traffic in addition to daily commuting. The MÁV will provide as much information as possible about the changes to the train service as soon as possible so that travellers can prepare themselves in good time.
Freight companies will be able to run freight trains via the detoured route during the renovation period.
The MÁV stresses that with the 100 km/h speed limit introduced on the line section, the railway line will remain safe to travel on, and until the renovation is completed, passenger and traffic safety will not be compromised, while passenger train journey times may increase by a few minutes.
