The Nyugati railway station underpass reconstruction continues with a full closure

As we previously reported, the renovation of Nyugati Railway Station continued in August with work on replacing the underpass and platform lifts. The trial excavations have been successfully completed, and larger-scale construction work will now begin in the underpass, according to a statement from MÁV Zrt..

The refurbishment of the crossing and the replacement of the platform lift is part of the investment of MÁV, financed by the national budget and the European Union under the Széchenyi 2020 programme.

As of 4 September 2023, the crossing connecting tracks WestEnd (1-9) with Cegléd Castle, i.e. tracks 14-17, will be completely closed. During the closure, the tracks can be accessed from the surface via the concourse, which may take a few minutes longer, so it is advisable to plan ahead when travelling.

The underpass toilets will continue to operate and can be accessed from the stairs next to the baggage carousels (in line with tracks 4-5). During the closure, tracks 11-12 will not be accessible from the underpass either, but will only be accessible from Teréz Boulevard, they added.

The renovation will include the complete replacement of the suspended ceiling and flooring in the underpass, including fixtures, new electrical network, drainage, and the replacement of the wall cladding and the set of side doors with the old stairs. The currently disused platform lift will also be replaced, making the underpass accessible from the station area. The design work for the new lift has already started.
