Some sections of the siding network of the Audi factory in Győr have been upgraded

According to the project manager, the former section STRAIL with a rubber pavement system was rebuilt with a reinforced concrete slab construction. The 50 cm precast reinforced concrete slab was lifted into place on site using a crane, bedded with concrete and, once the concrete had set, the rails were set in the trough in the slab and surrounded with Edilon infill.

The work was carried out during the company's two-week summer shutdown, and the technicians had only 9 days to complete the work. Because the raw materials, which are transported by rail, must be available before production can restart, Audi's logistics department minimised the time needed to complete the work.

"The most important thing was to be able to start the railway traffic, after which the road sections were rebuilt by our colleagues from the road side and the road traffic could start"

The implementation was complicated by several circumstances

In addition to the above, a 240-metre long section of track was also rebuilt inside the factory. Due to the small radius curve here, the rail wear was such that the rebuilding was timely. The section is also crossed by two wide asphalt crossings.

„It was difficult to build the road crossings on a 200-metre radius curve, so we had to install special systems and superstructure elements. One such special element is the UG base and the base plate built on it, which was manufactured by SWIETELSKY Vasúttechnika its own steelworks in Celldömölk. During the renovation, we installed 54 rails instead of the previous 48 rails, and we also replaced the crushed stone bedding.”

The project manager pointed out that they had to adapt to the extremely strict conditions of the factory's safety and security during the short duration of the project (12 days). They had to take into account the time needed for thorough checks on entry and exit. The work was also made difficult by the weather conditions: summer showers hit Győr at a critical time during the substructure works.

Finally, he added that a siding will be added in 2023, and rail tracking equipment will be installed.
