Trams 4 and 6 will soon be able to run on the whole line again, restrictions will be lifted

The tram development on Szent István körút, which has slowed down traffic in the city in recent years, will end on 1 August.

By Friday the renovation of the Szent István körút tracks will be completed, and from the beginning of August trams 4 and 6 will be running again on the whole line, between the South Buda terminus and Széll Kálmán tér. Once the renovation is completed, road traffic will also be restored on Szent István körút: buses, cyclists and vehicles will be able to use all lanes again, according to a recent information note issued by the Budapesti Közlekedési Központ (BKK).

Modern technology, quieter and faster trams

In the summer months, BKV Zrt. built a modern, heavy-duty, so-called circular track between Jászai Mari tér and Tátra utca. The rails were fixed with a unique automatic mixing device, unique in Hungary. Approximately 350 m3 of concrete was used to reinforce the foundation of the renovated section, and more than 100 prefabricated large panels were laid.

Thanks to the coordinated work of the BKV Zrt.'s multidisciplinary team and the contractor, the renovation was completed on time despite the extreme weather conditions that hampered the work, they stress. Minor finishing work on the section, which does not affect daytime tram traffic, such as filling gaps in the track zone, minor pavement repairs and painting pavement markings, is still expected.

Modern technology will eliminate the previous temporary 20 km/h speed limit, making Combino trams quieter and faster. This is particularly important for the reliable, round-the-clock operation of one of the busiest tram lines in the world.
