Tata protects against increasingly frequent flash floods with new canal system

The municipality of Tata has won a grant of nearly one billion forints for the development of the sewerage system in six areas of the town, Michl József Mayor József Municipality announced at a press conference held at the town hall on Friday.

The EU-funded Széchenyi Plan Plus investment will rebuild the systems and build new canals to make them able to cope with the increasing frequency of heavy rainfall due to climate change.

Hundreds of people living in the affected areas will have a better quality of life, and the houses and properties on the streets will be safer. The planned investment is an important step in a complex, city-wide, well-thought-out water management development.

In Tata, developments have recently been implemented that exploit the natural possibilities for water retention. Last year, a new 1,755-metre-long canal was built as part of a water management project worth more than HUF 1.1 billion, the closed section of the watercourse on Újhegyi út was rebuilt, and 11 rain gardens were created on a 500-square-metre area on Nádas utca, thereby mitigating the damage caused by flash floods.
