Pharmaceutical glass manufacturer increases capacity with clean room production hall

The German company has been present in the Vas County settlement since 1993, where it manufactures packaging materials and special sterile pharmaceutical glass products. Over the past two decades, the Lukácsháza plant has quadrupled in size. Last year, the innovative, pre-fillable glass syringe production unit was handed over. A new phase of development has recently begun with the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone. On behalf of SCHOTT Hungary Kft., STRABAG can begin construction of a production hall covering more than 6,000 m².

The most modern production line installed in Lukácsháza

The production of ampoules and vials started in Lukácsháza in 1995, with the most modern production lines installed in the Hungarian plant. The vials ensure the preservation and safe administration of the active ingredient of the medicines. Among other things, packaging materials for insulin dosage for diabetics and products for the storage of injectables used in patient care are manufactured here.

New production hall under construction

At the end of April, STRABAG's experts took over the site to build the more than 6000 m² cleanroom production hall for SCHOTT Hungary Kft., following the design phase. According to the company, the project is currently in the design phase, during which the technological needs of the pharmaceutical industry are being assessed and evaluated, and the plans are being adapted to GMP (good manufacturing practice) standards on the basis of these needs. GMP sets national and international quality assurance requirements for pharmaceutical manufacturing, production equipment and the manufacturing environment.

Construction in a challenging working environment

The construction company's specialists are preparing the site for the foundation by relocating utilities, cutting trees and stabilising the subsoil. When planning the construction, it must be taken into account that the construction will take place on the site of a working factory and in the immediate vicinity of another construction site. In addition, high groundwater levels make the work difficult.

Prefabricated elements speed up construction

Once the planning and permitting processes are complete, CFA pile driving can begin. Precast reinforced concrete elements will be used in the construction, including slab panels, beams and staircases, together with the pillar frame. The work - and the work of nearly a hundred people working on the site - will be supported by piling machines, excavators, concrete mixers, concrete pumps, graders and road rollers.

Designing cleanrooms is a real challenge for designers and contractors

One of the most interesting elements of the project is the design and construction of the clearance area. For high purity spaces, strict specifications and requirements apply, for example, to dust contamination, settling time, temperature, humidity, internal pressure, and the need to ensure constant control. This artificial and controlled environment is necessary for the production of pharmaceutical packaging products. The clean room is designed with an air-tight construction of the suspended ceiling, special wall construction, ventilation solutions and sterilisers. The energy required for the comfort of the hall building is obtained from the technological systems used.
