Millimetre-deep protection in Esztergom - New flood protection wall built with PERI formwork system
The implementation of the first phase of the new dam system in Esztergom, commissioned jointly by the National Water Authority (OVF) and the Esztergom local government, is progressing according to plan and has now reached a spectacular stage. We have previously reported on the work being carried out on Prímás Island previously reported in our newspaper, and the experts at PERI informed our newspaper about the current progress and technical solutions of the project.
Phase I on Prímás Island, along a stretch of about 1.5 km from the Maria Valéria Bridge, will first involve the construction of the lower, monolithic reinforced concrete section of the flood protection wall, which will be 4.0 m high on average.
A steel foot structure will be placed on top of the reinforced concrete wall with millimetre precision, to which an IBS mobile flood protection wall with a height of 1.2-1.9 metres will be connected if necessary.
PERI TRIO formwork for high concrete pressure
The reinforced concrete walls were constructed by Menzor BGMI Kft. and PERI Kft. experts calculated significant structural pressure for the 4.5 metre high, 50 cm thick reinforced concrete walls. The high load-bearing capacity of the PERI TRIO steel frame formwork system provides the contractor with a reliable, well-known technological background.
The TRIO shutter system is quick and easy to install, using only one universal fastener for all connections.
Its robust steel frame guarantees long life and high safety even under high concrete pressure. The system consists of a minimum number of elements, which helps construction from a logistical point of view and speeds up the work. The flexibility of the TRIO system allows the elements to be adapted to the shape requirements of 62 sections of the 1100 m wall with variable geometry.
Aesthetic requirements and precision of execution
The inner-city section of the Great Danube promenade, the protection structure, placed particularly high aesthetic demands on the contractors. PERI worked with the client to develop an impression of the exposed concrete surface, and the TRIO formwork panels used in the project were given a new shell, with the formwork shells used being replaced throughout the construction. The oiling of the formwork panels was also carried out to the client's specifications to ensure the required quality.
The PERI specialists will support Menzor throughout the construction process, servicing the project's material needs and will be present on site every 2-3 weeks.
Progress and prospects
The project is currently about two-thirds complete, with the completion of the lower wall sections and the reinforcement of the IBS mobile system in the coming months.
Preparations for the second phase are currently in the planning phase, and it is expected that this phase will also include a similar length of mobile wall.
