The renovation of Veszprém's 1600s dungeon can continue

In May 2024, we reported that the Veszprém Castle prison exhibition had opened on the third floor of the courthouse. The work of the Fejér-B.Á.L. Zrt. and VEMÉV-SZER Kft. consortium has undergone a complex renovation worthy of its history as a prison since the 1600s. As a continuation of this, the dilapidated building facade can now be renovated, with applications for the construction work open until 30 September.

Renovation can continue

According to the public procurement tender announced by the National Court Office public procurement procedure announced by the National Court Office, the successful bidder will have 12 months to renovate the roof and facade of the Veszprém Court of Justice's Várbörtön building (Veszprém, Vár utca 19, plot no. 235). The planned start date for the renovation work is the fourth quarter of 2025.

The building of the Veszprém General Court is under local, individual protection, and its renovation is subject to heritage protection notification due to its historic environment. The renovation of the roof, the façade (including the replacement of the windows) and the stone cladding of the castle's curtain wall must be carried out as a whole.

During the renovation, the building will remain occupied and the continuity of judicial activity must be ensured.

Preservation of Turkish-era walls among the tasks

Although the 'old castle wall' is not affected by the current renovation, as it is located inland from the 17th century exposed castle wall, partly under the prison wing building and partly under the courtyard, the contractor will have to clean and replace the joints of the Turkish-era castle wall, which is also the plinth of the court wing, in addition to the contractor's responsibility:

• Roof renovation (replacement of the roof cladding with associated tin roofing, external thermal insulation of the roof plane above the rafters above the built-in spaces);
• façade renovation (plaster repair, replacement of windows and doors);
• construction of anchoring points for the south-west façade scaffolding; construction of scaffolding, building works in the attic, attic space, lightning protection.

• roofing (roof sheathing) area: 889 m²,
• frontage surface: 1782 m²,
• Replacement of 124 windows and doors as per the design (renovation or replacement of outward and inward opening casement windows with sash and casement windows with coupled transoms).
